Hey, now for something different: Tonight I take pics of the Moon, just by using an iPhone that looks through a small telescope. It's a piece of cake provided you've got a scope already – a very basic one will already do fine!

You need a small telescope, smartphone and a smartphone adapter. Here's the one that I have from a good German/European astro shop:

You can also just browse Amazon, eBay or whatever other online shop / sales platform for "smartphone telescope adapter". There are many of these around!

You want a telescope that is roughly equivalent to mine? Here's the current version of the Celestron C5:

But you don't need to spend that much to get a nice view of the moon! Here's a very affordable one for your kids:

Note:
I have no connection to these vendors or any benefit if you shop there.

Hi Tomscameras, your photo is very nice but I tried your method but I cannot get any image at all on the iPhone screen. Do you do any adjustment on the iPhone camera App itself before taking the shot? Your video first shows a blob of the moon followed by a beautiful image and no adjutment in between. Can you maybe go thru the problems that may arise? Sorry not so simple for some thanks.
  • What brand are those Plössl eyepieces you use? Love the vid. Thank you for making it. Back in 99 I took a lot of pictures of the moon through my telescope with a very low res Sony Mavica. It stored the pics on a 3.5 floppy computer disk. I was able to use the threaded mounting ring of a filter made for the camera to mount the camera directly to my telescope. I was amazed at how well these images actually turned out. I’ve been wanting to find a way to take pics and vids with my iPhone through the same old telescope. Thanks for showing me the way!

Won’t you have the eyepiece’s outside barrel view in the photo? Or did you crop them? Also, the phone doesn’t cover the whole eyepiece, so there will be stray light get into the eyepiece?

How far away is the smartphone from the eyepiece? Is it against the eyepiece? Thank you
  • I want to use my solar telescope to take pics of the sun. The exposure is overdone on my phone. How do I get the exposure less? Tap on the sun view on my phone?

Hey dear! I just loved this. The background music is too awesome to enjoy the astral moments. Even I tried clicking the image of the moon, it's my second day, still not able to get a better picture 😅. As you mentioned, patience is the key. Hope I get a better picture tonight. Request you to please share your email id. I would like to share my experiences of astral photography with you!
