Before & after video diary of me gradually transitioning my no poo method from washing my hair with a natural shampoo alternative to using WATER ONLY. My hair type is fine, oily, greasy and I have hard water - this makes washing with just water only and without shampoo especially hard, gah!

Using my Hello Klean shower filter and eventually incorporating soap nuts & apple cider vinegar in my hair washing routine has helped me achieve the best results for my #nopoo journey.

Homemade soap nuts shampoo recipe included in the video :)

No poo for 9 years! I used to have long hair, and it worked then. But now it's very short and it's even easier. Every time you showed your weekly progress I wanted to take a towel and preen your hair (don't mean to sound weird). Did you ever try that? That was my secret. Instead of the brush, I used the towel to preen from my scalp to the ends, this made such a huge difference and was the real turning point when I found this out. It's faster than brushing and absorbs so much more grease. I also think I didn't think about it as much, being a guy...but after a couple months I never looked back.
  • I've been water only for several years. The texture does change because you're used to squeeky stripped hair & it will settle into a softer oily texture. Now I gently wash my scalp under hot water & hair will eventually dry faster. Also, so many say it takes weeks to transition but I found it took several months. Combo hair transition plus learning curve on washing technique
  • Here's what I been doing with my hair after I've stopped using shampoo☺️. There's this medieval hair combing method in which you simply brush your hair everyday for a long time (by long time I mean at least 30 minutes 😅.🌿 If you have short hair then brushing less than 30 minutes might work just fine for you🌿) . First I divide my hair in two sections. Then starting with one section, brush the hair with a very wide teeth comb. After detangling I take a few drops of oil(coconut oil because that's what I have. You can use any oil you want) and apply that on the ends of my hair (because that part tends to get dry. 🌿 You can use more or less than few drops if it's necessary for your hair 🌿). Next step is to start combing the hair with a comb which has thin gap between each teeth ( is used for getting rid of lice). I just brush my hair from root to tip. Each section of hair for at least 15 minutes(you might have to clean your brush one or two times in between if it gets too dirty). And after I am done with both section of my hair the shine is unbelievable 😄(🌿 if you are someone who doesn't care about having shiny hair then brushing your hair every two days should be alright . You can try going more days in between brushing your hair using this method and see if that works. Rest of the days just brush your hair how you normally would🌿). There's no grease of flakes on the hair. It feels and looks like freshly washed hair. I don't use any other products on my hair. Simply use water for washing the hair. But I tend to make a bun every other day while showering because the tips of my hair tends to get dry if I wash them every day. But I make sure to get the roots of my hair wet and just massage them somehow with my fingers under running water 😅. Rest of the days I just wet my hair completely while massaging the roots a little. That's what I've been doing for the past two months. And everytime I tell someone that I haven't been using any shampoo, soap or conditioner the surprised look on their face is real😁. By the way, I live in a tropical climate and I have thigh length hair which is bleached from the mid length to tip. Never had to deal with the greasy feeling neither do I have split ends problem with my bleached hair because of this medieval combing method😊. Never had itching problem. My scalp smells just like my skin ☺️. So give it a try. You can just search medieval hair combing method on YouTube.

Tip on shampoo that works extremely well: Shampoo: Mix chickpea flour and water until it turns into a paste (its ok if a little bit watery), pour on your hair (I do this by standing outside my shower and bend over to wash my hair), and massage your whole scalp/hair/ends for like 2 mins or whatever feels good to you. Wash out thoroughly (there will be residue left when dried but you can easily shake it/brush it out when it's dried). Conditioner (optional but makes hair soft and restores the PH): rinse with a mix of 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar + 1 tbsp lemon juice + 0.5 - 1.0 liter of water. Let sit for 30 sec and then rinse with water. Not thoroughly, just a little. Dry as usual however you like. If using water only and you get very greasy, sticky hair, might be because you have very hard water. I do and had no idea why water only didn't work for me. If this is your problem, look below. Wash your hair and massage thoroughly through your scalp and hair. When done, rinse with lemon juice (1 lemon) mixed with water and massage again. When done, either don't rinse and rinse the next day or rinse right away. When the hair is dry, use a brush to distribute the sebum evenly through the hair. I do one part of the hair, wash my brush with soap, dry it, and then do next part. Do this as many times as you like. This makes a huge different when struggling with Water Only. Take care, stay safe, love our nature/planet and yourself!

I am closing out week 5 with water only, I’ve done a few rye flour washes. Something that helps was preening in the shower, as well as out (before). I feel we go into water only thinking (myself included) it will be easier. However, we’re going from chemically cleaning your hair to now having to mechanically clean your hair. It’s more work! You’re doing all the clean and distributing. Shampoo is easier.

Hi, little late to comment now but I think your hair looks gorgeous and it honestly didn't look "bad" or obviously "dirty" even at the first few weeks in between your soap nut washes. It looked healthy and well kempt. I think many of us are more aware of our own hair texture and conditions so it's hard to deal with the change and feeling of uncleanness. Im going through 2 weeks right now of water only (from washing my hair with commercial shampoo and conditioner every day) and my husband hardly notices the grease 🙄 idk if other people and strangers notice at all but no one ever says anything so I'm going to keep going... until I can't stand it any more. Thanks for the informative and honest video!
  • Who else is struggling with using just water only?! Here is an honest, hopefully more transparent version of the nopoo journey that I hope you can relate to... Let me know all your tips & tricks below (thank you!)

I really like the way you talk about it. U got a nice quiet way which I really enjoy watching. I just went 4 days without washing my hair and rinsing it only with water, and since that haven't washed it for 7 days so in total 11 days and I wanted to know how I could go on now, those two videos of u are the first I've been watching about this. I just only saw the combing method thumbnails and I tried it a little without even watching any videos getting any tips (I need too) but I did feel that combing had an effect as my scalp is ok, my hairs look terrible but it doesn't feel tooo bad I keep it in a very tight bun all the time (it's very long and I just feel like that's how it does not look completely gross) your video didn't really give me any answers yet to my current situation but I found it very honest and informative, so thanks a lot. I think we are both German, and our water in Bavaria us very hard as well (and I got similar, flat, thin, blonde hair) so it's good to know about that☺️
  • Awesome diaries, thank you very much and yes, totally, guys should try it!!!!! And almost nobody's saying it!
  • Hey. A man with longer hair doing this. Water only for about 9 months now. Last time i washed with shampoo was january and few times with a conditioner few months ago. I dont think im ever going to shampoo again. Yeah for sure it took several months for it to transition, but i think its totally worth it
  • how many days it will take to thick hair density when we wash hair with water?
  • The shower filter is what made the biggest difference. Without that thing, there{s no way I could us only water. It doesn't work without that filter because my local tap water isn't soft enough for it. But I originally went No Poo many years ago. And I've tried many different methods. I only use water-based products, usually something I've made myself. My current preference is an herbal rinse. I have a collection of maybe 15 different herbs and roots. And I cold brew them. And use that maybe once a week at most. I love my hair on this routine. I now actually aim for maintaining as much sebum in my hair as I can. It makes it look amazing. Maybe because I've been on this method for so long, my hair reacts differently to my own sebum?? It feels as though the quality of the sebum changes over time once you start using as your primary hair product for long enough, I don't know. I just know it works well for me. Edit: I'm a guy with hair about down to my shoulders by the way.

Can anyone tell me what to use to prevent smells if using no shampoo or gels ??
  • @molho761
Hi, why didn't you use shampoo without sls, and without parvans ?
  • idk if your doing this now but i do know back in the ye olden days (pre modern shampoo) woman combed their to get all the oils from the roots to the other parts using natural material brushes and combs. so that might add something? love this video!
  • im thinking of doing the no poo but i just dont know how it will go and like i dont really wanna use the baking soda or apple cider rinse things?!? idk but i heard about this today and since i havent washed my hair fo 2 days already i guess im starting now hahaha. it is great to see others going for it. thanks for the share :>>
