How we are keeping our RV cool in the summer heat. Nate puts up reflectix insulation on the roof of the RV to keep the summer sun from heating up the RV.

The best thing you can do is get those inexpensive shade cloths like you use on green houses over the top. Put some poles up on the corners and sides of the RV and suspend the shade cloth over it. You need the air flow between the shade cloth and the top of the RV, and it will leave room for your ac to be able to vent properly. You will see a huge difference.

I think you need a barn cat or two... they are the best first line of rodent defense.
  • @daveseip4809
Come one you know the mice and rats are going to get into that right away you need more barrels to keep your feed safe sorry to be so blunt this is the first time I’ve ever commented on one of your videos I’ve been watching your journey for a long time

Rodents are resourceful. How about some barn cats? Natural repellants and they will handle the mice! Keep sharing! lots of great ideas! Thank you Nate!

K&S Getout had the same problem with their camper overheating so they gave up on the rooftop air unit and bought a small window unit. So far they seem satisfied so it might be worth a shot

Why not just move the RV into the shade? Even in a mostly shaded spot with dappled sun, youll get some relief. Perhaps buy a longer water hose and electric cord to give you more distance if needed...

A covered RV carport would have been the first thing I would have built. It would help with all weather and protect the RV.

When we were living in ours, we built a shade hoop thing that we attached to the roof- built it with pvc and 75% shade cloth, like a hoop house to accommodate the height of the ac. worked pretty well
  • I'm wondering how pigs, and sheep, and chickens survived before there were companies that made livestock feed.

Nate, the mice are laughing at you! The darn things have climbed the chicken wire to the top of my carport coop and made nests on top and climbed down the strep I used to hang the chicken feed to keep the mice out of it. I put a trail cam out there and watched the mice run up and down the wire and the ratchet strap
  • find out if you have a peanut farm near you they give or sell cheap the husks and the peanuts that dont make the grade for them and they are really nutritious for the pigs hugsss
  • Cinder blocks Won’t help with mice control. Mice can climb up chimneys therefore cinder blocks. I would invest in some more 50 gallon barrels. You will need them over the long term anyway.

Nate, I just went on Craigslist Knoxville and found you 55 gallon good grade barrels for $15 each right in Parrotsville. Food Grade Plastic Barrels - $15 (PARROTTSVILLE) I have 55 gallon, white plastic, food grade barrels for sale. Previously contained a food product but rinsed thoroughly.

I used reflextix on the roof of my 32 ft motorhome. I used those flat cement blocks similar to patio blocks to secure instead of tape. I have 40 mph winds regularly, and the blocks don't budge. Hurricanes and tornadoes, of course, are a threat where I live in south Texas, but I'm leaving in my motorhome if anything more than category 1 winds are forecasted. But then again, if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.... My results are impressive along with the windshield being cover on the outside with Reflectix. The 12,000 btu Coleman air-conditioner keeps the inside at 82° with an outside temperature of 100° (Inside humidity is 50%!) Prior to the installation of the insolation (see what I did there?) My inside temperature was 95° with humidity at 64° My 12 year old Chihuahua Lulu and I spent time riding around in the car during afternoon hours, but that was ridiculous. If you think 82° is too warm for inside temperatures, trust me, it's not at all! Not at 50° humidity. Now my Chihuahua lays under a blanket...poor Lulu can't win.... My air-conditioner actually cycles off and on now! My electric bill is almost 1/2!

Nate, you are such a wonderfully self-motivated man. You have a wonderful work ethic. I can see a very wonderful homestead taking shape. You and Katty are a real inspiration to those starting out in homesteading. Ben Holler feeds his pigs some kind of wet pig slop, do you? I know you are friends.
  • @dibutler9151
You can free range the pigs if you have enough out there for them to graze on, but a lot of people find small local grocery stores, cafes, juice places, etc., that have a lot of leftover produce they have to throw out and arrange to take their scraps. A man near me fed his pigs on the elementary school leftovers.

Put a sheet of tin over the pallets with your grain on it so it gives the mice a flat overhang to have to negotiate.
  • @susanbaker8130
With all your trees, there’s no place to park under their shade?

Nate, we have had some incredibly hot days! It has been hotter here, than at my s. Florida home. You took the steps to stay comfortable in a trailer during this heat spell. Great short term solution to get to where you are comfortable. Remember, happy wife, happy life. As you progress on solutions, please feel free to call or email me and i will help where possible. Keep doing things your way, as you have a plan and a desire to achieve those goals via that plan, learning as you go, and by mistakes.
