Incarnation in the Old Testament | Ezekiel 34:23-24 | N.T. Wright Online

Published 2024-06-24
Ezekiel 34 wrestles with the question of God’s return to his people—not only whether it will happen but also what it will look like. In answer, God declares that he will share the shepherding vocation with the Davidic king. Beyond simply answering the logistical question of how God might return to the people of Israel, this idea sets us up to better understand later conceptions of Jesus’s incarnation and vocation as the good shepherd.

Give me strength Lord Jesus. I’m struggling providing for my children. I will keep faith. I have two beautiful boys both have special needs. I’m overwhelmed because they require so much from me. I’m fearful because every month is a struggle to not end up on the streets with my boys. Lord restore my faith. I’m so tired Lord Jesus of constantly struggling to pay bills and struggling to buy groceries. Ashamed because I’m failing as a mother. Please Lord continue to give me strength.

Brilliant! God is in His heaven, NTWright's pouring tea, and all's right with the world!  Good to see "Reading Scripture Together" again.

This lesson certainly provided evidence that the Old Testament is all about Jesus. I am grateful for this opportunity to understand where in the Old Testament there are these references to the Incarnation and Jesus himself. Thank you for sharing.
  • Thank you so much for bringing back "Reading Scripture together". I have missed these weekly insights into scripture and how you bring the Old Testament and the prophecies of Jesus into the New Testament where Jesus will relate himself back to the Old Testament.

The fact that this will live on forever, to help others get deeper into the scriptures is such a gift!!!

Thank you! What a wonder to see the way God uses His word to reveal His plan, His reality, and His love for us.
  • So helpful to see the incarnational God as Shepherd of Israel in Ezekiel and now Shepherd of all who come to God through Jesus!.
  • So good that Tom can give us a wee reflection to ponder each night before sleep. God bless you Tom.

These tidbit studies are the crumpets for the ‘spots’ of tea that set the day right. Fascinating message on the Davidic throne / good shepherd passage in Ezekiel . And if I may we must add of course David’s Ps. 23 proclamation acknowledging the good shepherd leading us all into his glorious fold. Thank you so much for breaking loaves of the living word as our daily bread !!
  • I love the connection between the Old and New Testament, always glorifying Jesus! I studied Ephesians with you in Houston, and I told you, "You're a Super Star!" You are to me!

Beautiful! Thank you. The more I’ve delved into the Old Testament, the more I recognize how I was robbed! In my early education — Such a disservice to have been taught (almost!) exclusively ‘about’ the New, without the critical base of the Old…
  • Glad these are back. Prof Wright always has wonderful insights!

We were made in God’s image and Jesus is the true image bearer. ❤❤❤

  • Wonderful to hear the breadth and scope of Gods plan … Thank you
