Honestly, the solar farm seems the best idea for their economy. The problem is they want a giant one instead of thousands of normal sized ones.

I have a funny feeling that the favourite computer game played in Saudi Royal family was Simcity.
  • At least the reduced power output still exceeds the 1.21 Gigawatts needed for the Flux Capacitor.

Lol I would urge viewers not to skip the ad on this one, watching Simon awkwardly trying to keep a straight face while selling underwear is a treat.

Desert autocracies, ludicrous amounts of money, and extravagant monuments to mankind’s boundless arrogance…truly a match made in heaven.
  • @JohnnyAFG81
That solar farm is a good idea, although I wonder what the sandstorms will do to the sensitive electronics.

When I served in the US Army during the first Gulf War, we were temporarily housed in an entirely vacant modern city in Saudi Arabia, (one of the best billets ever!) allegedly built for the Bedouin who refused to live there...
  • @tigerenmars
Biggest is not always the best, when it comes to electricity, it's best to bet on several smaller rather than one big, that only produces under specific conditions..
  • @Strider91
Bro, I'm not even Muslim. . . And the idea of turning Mecca, one of their holiest sites into a Las Vegas style destination. Sounds sooo offensive lol

Saudi Arabia can be perfectly summed up as "more money than brains"
  • @davidhughes4089
I can't believe Simon chopped himself up with a bonesaw then threw the chunks down a well, RIP fact boy
  • @bvbxiong5791
when you have so much money, you gotta think up of ways to waste it...
  • @MikeGaruccio
Completing .1% of a gigaproject counts as a successful megaproject right?
  • @derekr1113
The only reason they planed the solar plant was to take panels away from serious use. It was always a delay tactic
  • @jameswright4420
You should do one on Sri Lanka’s fantasy “green city”. Talk about a failed mega project!
  • @Tzimisce
I think a preplanned city like the last example would probably do a lot better in a country that people actually want to live in.
  • @jimcappa6815
They had to rename them Gigaprojects because.they found out someone was.using the Megaprojects name already!

Given just how much of Saudi Arabia is about as unusable desert as you can possibly get, turning some of it into solar power plants isn't necessarily the worst idea, theoretically. The problems start when you take that simple idea to clueless people, whose cash funds are exceeded only by their megalomania.
