Laundry Room Makeover, Part I: Installing a shelf behind the washer & dryer for additional storage

Published 2024-07-23
Earlier this year, frustrated by my slow progress with home improvements, I finally decided to start on the smallest, easiest room to fix up: the laundry room. Mine is tiny and has no storage behind a high shelf and coat hooks that I installed, myself. Being as this is the room I most often come and go from, it's just not enough. I need way more functionality in this room.

And I'd love it to be pretty and charming, too.

There are multiple projects I'd like to do in this room, but ultimately, I decided to start with the simplest: install another shelf, this one behind the washer and dryer. That area was once about nearly 300 square inches of wasted space - space that could be used for desperately needed storage.

So I popped over to Home Depot, bought some lumber, and got started. It was a simple project - three boards, with the legs connected with bracket supports. I painted and sanded the wood to give it a shabby chic look and despite a few flaws in my work, I'm quite happy with the way it looks - and even happier with the increased storage!

I still haven't tamed the clutter in that room and am also hoping to complete other projects, including: installing hat hooks above the coat hooks, changing out the overhead light (intimidating!), painting or wallpapering the room (and maybe adding wainscotting), and adding cabinets (also intimidating!). What should I do next?
