Phantom of the Opera, the horror classic, based on the not-so-classic book that was okay, I guess, and then Hollywood-ified into a string of increasingly out-there adaptations, and all before the Broadway musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber changed the game, but here is a look at poor Erik before Lord Andy.

  • The weird cloth thing on his his face has a little more impact when you realize there was a contingent of WW1 veterans that used similar prosthetics and the population was aware of them.
  • *Christine sees creep ass coffin and is justifiably freaked out. Erik the guy who lives in the basement: “ Yep. It is what it is baby.
  • If you made a 30 hour analysis of the different adaptations of the Phantom, I would watch the hell out of it.
  • It just occured to me that V for Vendetta is basically a Phantom of the Opera retelling, and whoa.

It even became a goosebumps novel, "Phantom of the Auditorium"

I've read the book and it's not bad. Basically, Eric is the Batman of classic horror monsters. He's not superhuman but he's so good at everything that he might as well be.
  • "Song teaches Sung to sing"...Goddamn it, I love you.  EDIT: Never mind; you've got it covered.
  • "I used to be a performer like you. Then I took an acid pan in the face..."

I'd watch a 26 part series on the history and influences of Phantom adaptations...

"FEELINGS!!" I couldn't stop laughing when you interjected that fantastic summery of the phantom's drama queen theatrics.

Phantom of the Paradise is one of my absolute favorite films, so when I realized Lindsay was going to talk about it I got a bit nervous tbh. It's definitely not a movie for everyone, but ahhh I'm so happy that it has her approval!

When I was an uncultured child, I saw The Phantom of the Megaplex. I thought it was okay. Then when I heard about The Phantom of the Opera, I thought it was a derivative of the movie I had already seen. I then thought no more of it for a decade or more until my fiancée corrected me on the subject.

"hey guys I gotta grenade!" "ah ha! just kidding!" XD
  • We are capable of great evil and great art. That I think is the appeal of the story for me.

"And then we get the acid in the face and hot damn with the crazy" So... he's Jack Nicholson as the Joker?

The man who was based on the phantom, was a pianist in the Garnier opera house. His name I think was Ernest (forgot his last name) and he lost his wife (who was a ballet dancer there as well) in a fire and was disfigured by the fire too. His was the body that was found when they opened the opera house's time capsule in the lowest level. Though I'm not sure if this story is true or if it's made up for the phantom fan tourists.
  • I love how this character, who's become this grand romantic hero, is called 'Eric'. Like, I know one Eric and he's a seventy-something year-old retired Vicar. It reminds me of the whole Tim the Enchanter gag from Monty Python and the Holy Grail...

"Phantom" was the first story to teach me that a villain could be sympathetic.
