How to Grow Blueberries: 7 Step Guide for Beginners

Published 2019-07-11
Do you want to grow blueberries but you're not sure where to start? I planted four blueberry bushes in my garden during my first season. Seven years later, I now grow enough to eat fresh, freeze, give away, and even sell at our local farmer's market.

If you're ready to plant blueberries and start harvesting for years to come, follow these seven steps.

The timing of, "make sure to protect your blueberries from wildlife" followed by the big, black shape running by in the background just cracked me up! My husband and I are building a house right now and we're also adding a dog run so I'll be sure to plant my berries there!!
  • Started planting blueberry bushes this year! New adventure for me ...I grow blackberries, grapes, muscadines, pears, apples, fig, peach, apricot and pecan so far.

Step4 - You must plant at least 2 bushes and those bushes must be of Different varieties or you will not get berries. Notice how Jill had 2 different varieties.

  • For those beginners who want to grow blueberries in buckets: 01. Bucket 55l (15 gallon) 02. Soil from a pine forest 03. Mix the soil with pieces of sticks and pine bark 04. Pine bark mulch Purchased soil is dead soil. No doubt. Purchased fertilizer is not as good as slowly decaying sticks with pine bark. They gradually give the blueberries nutrients. If you really want to take care of the blueberry, it is a good idea to let pieces of pine bark stand in water for several weeks. As soon as the water "rusts", it also has a low ph, then water them. If you have blueberries in black buckets, they will heat up a lot in the sun and the roots will suffer. Either use white buckets or simply paint the black ones white or wrap them in paper or aluminum foil. One last piece of advice: the more varieties of blueberries, the more fruit you will have. Failure is not possible with this procedure
  • I'm laughing...just as you spoke about protecting your blueberries from animals, your dog runs by in the back. LOL Great tips....I will refer to this video as I get more plants and grow a plant instead of a little stick.

Thank you Jill! I have two of my first bushes both different varieties. My big concern before putting them in the dirt Is that I do it right with a PH. Your information was helpful. I’ve got to be an expert making sure the soil is good before I plant those two because they mean so much to us as we love blueberries. Thank you For this very helpful video!

Excellent video Jill. I've had some blueberry plants for 3 years now and they are just not doing to much. I'm going to get soil tested and use the sulpher. Thanks so much and also, you sure are pretty!

I really liked your thumbnail it’s so precious. You are so adorable. 🥰
  • One thing you can do is that you can grow blueberries in 3x3x1' raised beds - you can fill the bed with premade acidic soil and soil acidifiers so a) you don't have to wait for the soil components to break down to become acidic and b) you can keep the acidic soil away from other plants. I would never plant blueberries directly into the ground unless your soil is already unusually acidic; soil acidifiers are just going to leach away and you'll have to re-apply throughout the year.
  • Thank you so much for this! Bought some bushes from lowes but these tips will definitely help!
  • One of the purpose of gardening is sharing to all.. so planting more blueberries is a must in order to share with birds and wild life. They will be thankful for your cooperation and they will help to amend your soil. Pretty soon more blueberries will grow from the wild life poop and your initial sharing will be rewarded.
