Will President Nicolas Maduro win another term in Venezuela? | Inside Story

Published 2024-07-28
It's being called the most consequential election in Venezuela in a generation.
The opposition is hoping for an overwhelming victory that could force President Nicolas Maduro to negotiate a transition of power.
The challenge is the biggest the country's socialist regime has faced in 25 years.
Years of economic collapse and political repression have worn down the socialist revolution started by late President Hugo Chavez in 1999.
If Maduro is defeated - will he recognise the results - or try to stay in power?
And what does the outcome mean for Venezuela and the South America region?

Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom

Guests
Paola de Aleman, Venezuelan opposition politician and academic.

David Smolansky, former Mayor of a Caracas district now living in exile.

Christopher Sabatini, Senior Fellow for Latin America, Chatham House

  • I am writing to bring to your urgent attention a grave incident involving the torture of students by the Bangladesh government during the recent quota movement.. The students were peacefully protesting against the government's quota system when they were subjected to severe violence by the authorities. This unwarranted aggression has left many injured and traumatized, and it is imperative that the international community is made aware of these human rights violations. We are seeking your support in shedding light on this situation and bringing global attention to the plight of these students. Your coverage can play a crucial role in pressuring the authorities to take action against those responsible and ensure the safety and rights of the students. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response. Best regards,
  • From my farway Brasil: I am sorry to see Aljazeera covering the Palestinian issue so well and having a pro-imperialist bias towards Ukraine and now Venezuela. Btw, sanctions against Venezuela began in 2015 with Obama and Biden who argued that Venezuela posed a threat to U.S. security.

gosh, I wonder <.< gotta feel a little bad for the guy-- he gets all the blame for the malfeasance of his successor, who had EVERY opportunity to set money aside, invest wisely, and create sustainable national wealth for the future while oil prices were sky high in the early 2000s... instead he just piddled it all away the second he had it and left nothing for his nation's future-- Cuba even developed a plan for him of what to do to create a SUSTAINABLE economy with all that wealth that they would LOVE to have... and he did all the expensive social programs but didn't do ANY of the long-term planning stuff that they told him to do so that they wouldn't be SO heavily reliant on imports....

There are millions of Venezuelans that have left their country in the last decade. They don't want people like him as their president.

Bangladesh night news. Pay attention, what did Shajis show with his fingers? They were threatened and taken to the DV office and the agitation was called off. Even the police behind the camera had weapons in their hands. (follow the fingers)
