According to Awdry, Gordon didn't always have his square buffers. He apparently crashed into the station, causing his old buffers to be damaged. When he went to works, they had no round buffers left and so he was fitted with a pair of square shaped ones. The ones that he wears to this very day. Turns out, there was alot more to this story, involving curses?? Engines from Sodor's past??? AND SHANE DOOINEY OF ALL ENGINES GOT INVOLVED??? WHATS HAPPENING??? Well, find out in this story lmao

Gordon just being a twat to Neil who was just trying to make him feel better about his new buffers is very in character for Gordon at that time period
