I was diagnosed 20 years ago and my neuro said I have a “textbook case of MS.” So, no spinal tap for me. If it is really not necessary/confirmatory it should be skipped. If I can avoid getting a hole poked in my back-I will!

I'm in the UK and a nurse. I was diagnosed 18 years ago. When i went to see my GP he was brilliant and asked me what i wanted to do. He agreed that yes i presented with what sounded like MS and said he was going to refer me to a neurologist. He then asked what tests I would like, a spinal tap or an MRI. I turned down the spinal tap because i have lower back pain, too much work as a carer in a nursing home before i started my nursing degree and was taught how to lift patients safely. When i saw the neurologist she had my MRI as well and confirmed that i have MS. I phoned her later to book another appointment as I wanted to look at my MRI. I think i just needed to confirm what i already thought about having MS.
  • I have a Harrington Rod in my back so I never needed a spinal tap. The MRI’s and symptoms were more than enough to verify the MS.
  • So the lumbar puncture is not a rule, the MRI classic spots is a definite for diagnosis

Then what's helpful in that case? What should a patient who thinks they have ms do when there's no visible lesions on the mri? Would another mri with contrast help?!

I have PPMS and for a year or two they weren’t sure what I had, in my case the spinal tap concluded my diagnosis. Not the big deal people make it out to be, slight headache after procedure, I was advised to drink lots of water after. 🤓

Im glad I refused a lumbar puncture. There was enough evidence from my MRI to diagnose MS and thankfully I didnt have to get one
  • I got a spinal tap even though they knew I had ms. Still put me to do that.. was horrible cos it took the doctor ages. Then when did get it was a horrible pain down my left side like he hut a nerve but went away soon as he finished. But wasn't as scary as I thought.
