OPEN for ingredients! Today we’re making Char Siu chicken. This is a Chinese style, oven roasted bbq chicken marinated to savoury, sweet, sticky perfection. Also super quick and easy to prepare, it's one of my all time favourite chicken recipes.

This is ultra versatile, personally I love eating this with chicken rice (my one pan chicken rice recipe here:    • Easy One Pan Hainanese Chicken Rice w...  ) but you can also top noodles with this.

I mentioned chicken leg in the video, this is the entire chicken thigh and drumstick portion, bone removed. I realise this is not that easy to find for most, so use chicken thighs as per ingredients list below. For bone-in chicken thighs, double the time in the oven to 30 to 40 minutes. Check that the internal temperature at the thickest part of the chicken has hit 74 deg celcius or 165 deg fahrenheit to ensure it’s cooked through. Or just poke a fork through thick part and juices run clear and blood-less :)

Ingredients:

- 300 grams Boneless Chicken Thigh (fatty ones are best)
- Marinade
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 1 tbsp Light Soy Sauce
- 1 tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 tbsp Dark Soy Sauce or Kicap Manis
- 2 tbsps Brown Sugar
- 1 tbsp Ginger-Garlic Paste (2 garlic cloves + 1 inch Ginger, pureed or grated)
- 1 tsp Chinese Five Spice Powder
- Pinch of white pepper
- 1 tsp red food colouring (optional)

EDIT: Yes, I am aware traditionally Char Siu is made with pork. This recipe is for some of us who do not eat pork (me)/prefer chicken. You can use these same ingredients for pork, though be aware that roasting time in the oven might differ.

Did this tonight with a spatchcocked chicken cooked over charcoal and it was spectacular. Cooked up the left over marinate into a sauce/glaze to paint on and sprinkled with fresh sliced spring onions for garnish. Thanks 😀
  • I made it yesterday.. marinated it overnight and my whole family loves it! You guys should try it!
  • Hallo Normadette! OMG! I had tried your recipe and it was fantastice! I was cooking lunch for all my colleagues in the office and asked them afterward "how was it?"... They all loved it! Now my mother in Canada will try it - I've told her it was sooooo good and not too complicated to make it! Thank you so much for a wonderful and delicous dish! And yes, you got a new subscriber!
  • I made it yesterday and put in freezer overnight and cook it today,my husband love it so much 😁....even I just using only sweet soy sauce, oyster sauce, salt, chopped garlic, honey and white sugar only....and I grill on pan with a butter for 15-20 minutes....still delicious 😋😋😋

I've been searching for this for whole year and didn't know the name. Thank you YouTube and thank you Noma!
  • I made this for me and my husband, and it was absolutely delicious. Thank you for the video.
  • That looks absolutely amazing! Chinese food is amongst the best I have ever had - but the prospect of preparing it myself is very daunting. This looks so easy to prepare and tasty! Thank you :)
  • My favourite char sui chicken recipes so far . The sauce when cooked down tastes amazing !
  • THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR THIS! I don't have an oven so I tried this by pan searing the skin side first then flipping and braising it with the remaining sauce on low simmer. Man, it is the most amazing looking chicken I've ever attempted to make so far even without the food colouring. The taste is somewhat similar to soy sauce chicken, yet the ngohiong and honey gave different hint of taste. I'll definitely put this on my recook list.

  • I love your presentation, very natural, not so written dialogue, or rehearsed. And the hand gesture is funny and cute!
  • I don't have an oven, but I really wanted to try this so I cooked this on stovetop + did some modifications in prep and cooking method, slow fire, and OH MY GOD. Zero regrets. 'Delicious' is an understatement. the taste is nothing I have tasted before and the way the sauce clung to the chicken was just so yummy 😋 will def do this again. Thank you for sharing this recipe.

I tried this recipe today and my mom who is half chinese (she is bedridden due to kidney disease) absolutely enjoyed it. I have to make another round tomorrow - LOL. Thanks so much for sucha simple yet delicious recipe!!!
  • Thank you for this recipe. I have been searching the internet for an authentic char siu or sweet Asian flavored glaze for chicken, because I too don’t want to eat pork. All I could find was Americanized versions with hoisin sauce. I have been making a lot of Asian dishes lately and I have all the ingredients. Plus, I only have a toaster oven & don’t want to grill. This is exactly the recipe I needed. Thank you!! 💕❤️

New oven coming soon! This will be the first thing I make. Thank you for the pork free version.
  • My goodness. I made this for my meal prep & let my lady & son try it. This is a amazing flavorful dish. I made it in the oven & she wants it now on our smoker. I cant wait. Thank you for a wonderful dish.

Made the Char siew chicken with hainanese rice tonight. Really tasty, my family loved it. Sautéed some asian veg with chilli and oyster sauce to accompany the dish. Thank you for the recipe and look forward to trying more of your dishes.
