Conflict. Climate change. And now … Covid-19.

Today’s challenges threaten progress toward a more equal, prosperous world like never before.

We need to dramatically change the way we work—now.

We can start by turning to a group that is often overlooked.

These leaders have earned the trust of their communities.

Their results, influence, and reach are remarkable.

They … are faith actors.

Faith-based organizations are in every country in the world.

Every day, they battle poverty, protect the vulnerable, and deliver essential services.

In times of conflict, violence, and pandemic, faith groups are still there.

That means they can access vulnerable communities—even when we can’t.

In Africa, 75% say the people they trust the most are religious leaders.

This trust enables faith actors to inspire behavior change, promote peace, influence social norms, and enhance governance and accountability.

To fight malaria in Nigeria, the World Bank worked with 6,000 faith leaders.

Together, we doubled the number of children who sleep under nets, and saved lives.

During the Ebola crisis, faith-based networks were key to stopping transmission by changing burial practices.

Faith leaders are helping change social norms in the Sahel around female genital mutilation and early marriage.

And in Venezuela and Syria, communities of faith remain a trusted refuge for people displaced by violence and conflict.

Today’s challenges call for a new approach.

The risk of not engaging is we become less effective.

But by choosing to collaborate more with faith actors, we improve how we work.

Sometimes, we all need a little faith.
