Loved it, then not so much? 2024 Lexus GX 550 Review

Published 2024-07-14
We drove it at the first drive event and loved it. Now on our second chance, we didn't love the 2024 Lexus GX 550 nearly as much.

  • ZOMG! Check the tire PSI! Guarantee you someone went ahead and cranked them up to 40-50 psi. I belive door pressure is 33psi cold. High PSI will absolutely ruin ride quality

I like the exterior looks of the 550, but the interior of the 460 is much better IMO. I would say it feels more old school Lexus with the material choices. I have a 2023 GX and it is smooth and very comfortable. Under powered in some instances but you know it’s super reliable. I have a 22 Tundra…love the power train but for obvious reasons I have less confidence in it compared to the GX V8. I’ve had no problems with the Tundra, but I have 100% confidence the GX will run trouble free for about 200k miles.

The styling is great. Lexus designers seem to have been inspired by the Chevy Silverado's side air inlet "gills". I can't help but see Chevy Silverado with the way the corners, just below the headlights look. I love the straight dash as well. Clean and simple. The cool box is great. Now they just need to add hot box mode for the winter haha. Sounds like the same hood flutter that the Tacoma has had complaints about in previous generations.

With the cupholder door open, you can rest a phone on it, works pretty good

First! I really like this vehicle. We purchase an RX recently and one, if not the best vehicle we have purchased. We might have purchased one of these but there was none available. One came in and was already sold. There really are none on the lot. Saying that, the engine issue has become great that we didn’t buy one. Yes, this and all V6 twin turbos has a major issue with a recall and hasn’t been fixed and nothing has been mentioned to be fixed as of yet. I am sure Toyota will make this right, but they are unable to yet. I just couldn’t buy one due to this or any other of Toyota with this engine. Odd you didn’t mention it also.
  • I've never driven a vehicle with a digital rearview mirror. However, the reverse camera on my Tacoma becomes useless at times when it rains and i am trying to backup. Does that happen to the digital rearview mirror cameras too or is the camera inside to prevent that from happening?
  • The adaptive variable suspension does not read the road in front of you and make adjustments accordingly. It just enhances the ride quality based on your settings.

No rear locks but its for off road? Only centre

It’s a new design so obviously it’s going to be an upgrade however the powertrain is not better! I prefer the V8 rather than the 6 cylinder turbo engine, they’re having some problems with this engine in the Tundra lineup.

I have the same model silverado you had, how does the ride feel compared to that?
  • The second row seats are both heat and cooled in the Luxury Plus.
  • @Aaron-zc9cw
I bet those 22's are to blame. I think the Overtrail probably has better ride quality.
  • @Cavemol5823
Did the engine run ok? Didn’t this get recall like tundra ?
  • @am1296
No KDSS. Only in overtrail. Makes huge difference in handling/sway
  • @icare7151
No rear self leveling air suspension no purchase. Will only purchase the Lexus GX460, with off road package, a superior vehicle on all levels.
  • @rlaracue
Isnt the limited more of a realtor in the making GX?
  • @Kdavis8377
Drove one of these when I sold my 4 Runner. It felt like a better 4 runner. Lots of plastic everywhere. For and finish wasn’t good. I then went and drove a new Lexus 460. I went home with the 460.

8.0" of ground clearance is pretty low in this market segment.
