The executive committee’s motion will enhance a more equitable access to the indoor ice sport facilities.
On June 18th, Toronto’s Executive Committee convened to deliberate on a significant motion aimed at enhancing accessibility and equity in the city's recreational facilities, specifically Moss Park Arena. This motion, led by Councillor Paula Fletcher, proposes transitioning the governance and operations of the arena from its current volunteer-led Board of Management to direct oversight by the City.
Moss Park Arena, located at 140 Sherbourne St., is one of eight arenas in Toronto managed by local volunteer boards. These boards handle the arena’s operations, including scheduling and programming for various activities such as hockey leagues and figure skating. The proposed transition seeks to address concerns about equitable access, particularly for residents of Moss Park and marginalized communities who may not currently benefit from the arena’s facilities and programs.
The motion includes an amendment directing immediate collaboration between the current Board of Management and the City’s General Manager of Parks, Forestry, and Recreation to explore opportunities for enhancing community access to the arena’s programs. This amendment, along with the overall motion, will be considered by City Council on June 26, 2024.
If approved, the motion mandates the development of a comprehensive transition plan. This plan will assess financial implications, workforce impacts, and operational adjustments required for a smooth transfer of governance by the end of 2025. The report presented at the meeting indicates no immediate financial impact from these proposed changes.
This initiative highlights Toronto’s broader commitment to ensuring that public facilities like Moss Park Arena are safe, well-maintained, and accessible to all residents and community organizations. It represents a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and fairness in community sports and recreation.
The key speakers on this pivotal decision were Andy Marcus, Chair of the Moss Park Board; Councillor Chris Moise, representing Toronto Centre; and Councillor Paula Fletcher, who proposed the motion to adopt the item as amended.
