Nik the Booksmith Deserted Island Challenge

Published 2018-11-17
Hello! This is my first video. Yikes! Here is the journal I made on my little deserted island with 4 given items: matte Mod Podge, Cutter Bee scissors, tea-painted paper, needle and green thread. I wisely chose 4 items: a 10"x15" run of wallpaper border, a bandana, a Zig marker, and a green hanging file folder. If none of this makes sense to you, please see Nik the Booksmith's challenge video AND her Q & A video.

I want to explain how I make my tea-painted paper. I was inspired by Mike Deacon to paint tea onto paper with a foam brush. But instead of baking the paper, I use a combination of air-drying and a heat tool. I make drips and splatters, and stencil the paper using baking/cookie racks, pizza pans, muffin tins, etc. I get the same effects as tea-dying without the browning that occurs with oven-drying.

I hope you like my journal and my video. If you have any suggestions for this newbie, please let me know. Thank you for your kindness.

Thank you, Nik. It was a fun and frustrating challenge that got me onto Youtube for the first time. Thanks!

You have a vivid imagination like me Mara. This challenge was concluding when I joined YouTube and was the first time I’d seen hand made journals. I was hooked from then on. I know you were limited to how many items you could use, but the wallpaper piece was a great idea. A lovely journal and I loved watching many of the other makes. I missed this one at the time. Tfs xxxx. Love it Mara
