Cass Scenic Railroad: Parade of Steam 2024

Published 2024-06-15
On June 15th, 2024, the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia conducted its fifth annual Parade of Steam event featuring all five operational Shay steam locomotives! This event was free of charge for the public to enjoy, which led to a very large and impressive crowd forming even hours prior to the start of the parade.

Starting at approximately 9:30am, each steam locomotive made its way down the line to the Cass depot. Then, shortly after 10am, the parade began with a runby of each locomotive individually. This was then followed by two runbys of a double and triple header, which was then followed by a qunituplheader runby, and a grand final whistle show!

This parade was also unique, as it was the first to feature Western Maryland Shay #6, also known as the "big six", which was recently returned to service late last year. It is the second largest Shay locomotive ever built and was actually the last Shay to roll out of the Lima Locomotive Works shops in 1945.

As always, this was an incredible event to experience at the Cass Scenic Railroad! I want to give a big thank you to the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad, which operates the Cass Scenic Railroad, for creating this event for the public to enjoy! Additionally, a big thank you to all of the crews and those who work on these historic pieces of equipment at Cass, as they are the reason we can still enjoy these machines today!

Additionally, for those who are interested in the steam whistle line-up, they were as follows:
- Shay 11: Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) 6 Chime (Rizzoli)
- Shay 6: Louisville and Nashville 3 Chime (Freight)
- Shay 5: Shop-built 3 Chime
- Shay 2: Illinois Central 3 Chime (Rizzoli)
- Shay 4: Modified Crosby 3 Chime (I think... lol)

Lastly, I wanted to say it was nice meeting everyone that I ran into today and throughout this past week! I hope that you all enjoyed the parade as much as I did!

Without further ado, please enjoy the 2024 Cass Scenic Railroad Parade of Steam!!

Fantastic footage man! You had a great spot there and it was great seeing you there as well. Thanks again for the help you provided with this event. I also saw you briefly yesterday at the Pittston yard and said hello, but I dont think you knew who it was haha.

What an amazing event! And the whistles during the grand finale were off the charts! Glad you got to enjoy it this year, and hopefully I'll be joining you next year or sometime in the near future to see these amazing locos myself.

  • Why didn't Climax 9 run during the parade? Did Cass want the parade to be all Shays?
