Bone never owned a home or a bed. He never learned to read or write but he was the best cow hunter in Florida. Bone was a hard worker, hard drinker and best practical joker of all the drovers. His bullwhip was an 18 footer and he was so good he could gracefully flick a fly off a cow’s rump and not touch the cow. He could rope and brand any cow in a short time.
Bone Mizell, is the King of the Florida Cow Hunters. The artist Remington traveled from New York City to Florida to paint Mizell astride his horse. Remington titled it "A Cracker Cowboy." A legend in south Florida, "Bone" Mizell died at the Fort Ogden train depot and is buried at Joshua Creek Cemetery near Arcadia. .Bone Mizell died with his boots on July 14, 1921. His death certificate certified the cause of death as, “Moonshine. He went to sleep and did not wake up.”
