Sam Zell Shares The Secrets To His Success

Published 2019-01-22
Nobody knows entrepreneurship like Sam Zell. The Chicago-based founder/chairman of Equity International has made several fortunes in fields in real estate, energy, and communications. A two-time University of Michigan graduate (BA ’63, JD ’66), Zell is a major benefactor of the university, the Ross School of Business, and particularly its entrepreneurship programs, endowing the Zell Lurie Institute in 1999.

Recently, Scott DeRue, the Edward J. Frey Dean of Michigan Ross, interviewed Zell at a gathering of alumni in the Chicago area. Zell offered thoughts on what drives success, the connection between loyalty and corporate culture, and his most famous miscalculation in business.

Working for one of Sam's companies for 15 years was very enlightening and prepared me immensely to take on entrepreneurship in the manner that I have. Love his philosophy and business acumen.
  • Growing up in India I was told "The sky is the limit ". This was corrected in America to "There is no limit" Thanks Sam for teaching me real estate...

I am an artist and this came out to be one of the interesting interviews I have listened to. The stories are great. For artists, we are in many ways entrepreneurs promoting and learning not only how to create, but to find an audience for our artwork. Thank you to both Sam and Scott.
  • Absolutely right, creating a culture and hiring staff and people that have the same goals in mind as you is a proven formula for success. Throw in hard work, ethics and drive and you've got yourself a Zell.

So annoying when the host spends minutes talking about nothing not letting the guest start
  • I like his negotiation philosophy ... leave some on the table ... dont kill your opponent
  • Mitigating risk. Common theme echoed by Buffett, Munger, Taleb and many others. Know where the Scylla and Charybdis are at all times and steer clear of them.

Why are universities always so self-congratulatory?
