Bach - Cantata Gottes Zeit..., 'Actus Tragicus' BWV 106 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society

Published 2018-11-08
In 'Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, the combination of instruments Bach uses can be described in many ways – famous, idiosyncratic, exceptionally beautiful and meaningful. In any case, the instrumentation is an unusual one. The violins are conspicuous by their absence, but there are two recorders and two viola da gambas, which provide a soft, comforting and sometimes almost heavenly sound.

Recorded for the project All of Bach on May 16th 2015 at the Oostkerk, Middelburg. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

The English subtitling for this cantata was sponsored by the American Bach Society. The translation was made by Daniel R. Melamed and Michael Marissen. For an annotated version of the text and translation, see bachcantatatexts.org/BWV106.htm.

Thank god for Netherlands Bach Society and YouTube. Let there be Bach.

I love when she sings, “Ja, ja, Herr Jesu komm!”

Of all the cantatas I know, this tiny funeral cantata is my absolute favorite. The most sublime moment is during the alto chorale at the words "As God has promised me, death has become my sleep." It's not sad, it's transcendent.

God's time is the time to hear Bach.

The opening Sonatina was played at the Memorial Concert for Albert Einstein at Princeton in 1955. A fine violinist himself, Einstein particularly revered Bach. He knew that this music came from beyond space and time. - Dan B.

That man singing the alto part sounded gorgeous.
  • In each cantata there are always the same comments: "this is absolutely the best cantata Bach has ever composed". The true is that JSBach has composed exclusively masterpieces, and each of them is able to reach the most intimate site of our mind. He is the genius of the human kind. Here we have talented and exeptional musicians! You are great.

I have loved this piece for nearly 50 years now. One of the best renditions.
  • Mr. Daniels's performance of the "Ach, Herr" arioso is probably the best reading of that piece that I've ever heard. Marvelous.

I have possibly just heard the saddest music ever written, yet i am happy. Such is the dramatic genius of Bach.
  • @pjkhunold
One of the most profound Pieces of music ever. Bach was 22 years old the time he composed this. And the performance is as perfect as always. Such a delight to watch a band of devoted musicians performing a masterpiece of music in perfection, Thanks!

In all these NBS videos I love the faces of the musicians, which express a high degree of serious dedication. No-one is smiling for the camera, the faces register truly felt emotion, and for this reason they are all beautiful.

  • Stunning visual from the top of the church as the music arrives at a dramatic pause. All of these videos are a tremendous gift to mankind.
