  • Where Armageddon shouts, Deep Impact whispers, and it’s beautiful.
  • @Faye_L
Armageddon was fun, but Deep Impact lived up to its name. I've never forgotten how this movie made me feel. Even just the brief moment here of Morgan Freeman's final speech made me cry. 😭
  • @erickawesome5191
Favorite line, At least we'll all have high schools named after us.
  • @123jillbone
I start crying when she puts the little girl on the helicopter and don’t stop til the end…no matter how many times I watch
  • @dasta7658
Love Deep Impact more. Every actor nailed the emotion and their part.
  • @Wrathlon
One of my favourite parts is the Dad and his daughter saying goodbye to their Mum the astronaut saving humanity. Its very rare you see the roles that way around, especially for the time this movie came out. James Horner is a movie music LEGEND.
  • @vudujl83
Armageddon was definitely made for the theater experience since there were so many explosions and effects crowding the screen (vintage Michael Bay), while Deep Impact was going more for a character driven, scientifically accurate showing
  • @jkhoover
Oh... Did we not tell you that half the world perished in Deep Impact?
  • Addie! Thanks so much for doing this one. I see "Armageddon" out the wazoo; every corner I turn, it's there; every reactor is doing it. It is an entertaining film, but "Deep Impact" is a film that tugs at the heart. It's warm, thoughtful, and serious. It's so overlooked by reactors. I guess if you like wham-bam, then it might not be your cup of tea; but I find this film emotionally compelling and something that I could watch repeatedly. Kudos to Mimi Leder, the director, for crafting this wonderful film.

If you watched Armageddon (1998) & Deep Impact (1998), then I have a new challenge for you: Dante's Peak (1997) & Volcano (1997). Both are 1997 disaster movies related to volcanic eruptions. #MoreDisasterMoviesForAddieCounts
  • So glad you looked up James Horner. In any film in which he's doing the score, you can bet you will really FEEL that film. One of the greatest film composers of all time.
  • @Bad_Wolf_Media
It's weird how often two similar movies come out near each other like this. "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact," "K-9" and "Turner and Hooch," "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak," and more recently "The Equalizer" and "John Wick." It's just a really interesting phenomenon.

Through 1997 one of the big news stories doing the rounds was the idea that an extinction level event could happen at any moment, and the theories of how it might dealt with were explored. Really freaked me out as a kid. Responding to that two studios decided to make films that used that concept. The first one out was Deep Impact, about 5 weeks before Armageddon. Didn't make as much money as Armageddon but didn't cost as much - wasn't full of bankable named stars. The difference in tone between the two films is startling. I always preferred the more serious dramatic tone of Deep Impact over the kind of tongue in cheek humour and gung-honess of Armageddon. I remember thinking, when I saw Armageddon, 'Why can't they take it seriously?' I took the threat seriously and I was pissed, at the time, that Armageddon didn't really. Felt that would lead to people not taking it seriously... Now question is, do you take it seriously? Was I right? Are we ignoring the chance of saving the human race because we saw Armageddon, so don't take the threat necessarily seriously enough to invest any time and effort in space projectile monitoring? For the record this was directed by one of the very few female directors working in Hollywood at the time, Mimi Leder. She also directed the first Dreamworks feature film, The Peacemaker (I believe Deep Impact was the second). She would go on to direct Pay It Forward (2000) with Helen Hunt (Twister), Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) and Kevin Spacey (think you know him). If you've not seen it, add it to your list. The term 'pay it forward' was coined by that film, if you've ever heard that expression.

Awe Frodo holding two rings! Who knew a couple years later he would hold the most powerful of all!! And Tea Leoni!! Haven't seen all her stuff but BAD BOYS and THE FAMILY MAN are both awesome!! 🕊️☮️♾️😎
  • @starcraftre
My mother's favorite scene in any movie is Jenny and her dad on the beach when the wave hits. Not because it's a sweet and heart-wrenching moment, but because she hates Tea Leoni for some reason, and laughs whenever she sees it.
  • @gerstelb
1:39 The actor here is Charles Martin Smith, who also played a scientist in “Starman,” but is probably most recognized from “The Untouchables” or “American Graffiti.”
  • @keefriff99
Haha, the thinking man's Armageddon. And I love Armageddon. I don't care how dumb it is (and it is DUMB)...it's just fun, but Deep Impact is much more thoughtful and grounded.
  • Far too many comments for me to read them all, but this 65 year young Aussie can tell you that the jam packed freeway was a brand new road not yet open, the producers and director put out a call for people to come & be part of the movie, all the cars radio's were on a specific frequency receiving instructions from the director, so they all started running at the correct moment 😊
  • @davidshodeen4037
Hollywood did samething in '97 with 2 volcano disaster movies. "Dantes Peak" and "Volcano".
