  • I just wanted to let you know that my ten-year-old son and I made this cake this week for my wife's birthday and it was such a success! Well, actually we had to make a modification because our grocery store was out of strawberries, so we made a raspberry lemonade cake, but everything else was exactly the same. This was the first time we had ever made a cake completely from scratch - no boxed cake mix, pre-made frosting, or artificial flavors. My wife says it's the best cake she's ever had. Thanks so much!

  • 4 months late, but the best cake I ever had was from an elderly japanese woman at a mushroom foraging club. It was an incredibly rich and milky earl gray lavender cake (tasted like it had sweetened condensed milk in it) with an incredibly creamy, almost lemon curd or custard like lemony exterior. It tasted absolutely amazing. Like cream and lemon in earl gray lavender tea - but in the form of a cake with interesting textural qualities. It absolutely blew my mind, and I've tried / retried 3 or 4 times to make it.

  • Thank you so much for offering Swiss or Italian meringue buttercream as an alternative! We hate American buttercream in my family. When I first discovered Swiss meringue buttercream only a few years ago, my husband was amazed and thrilled. I never made American buttercream before but it was such a pleasant surprise to discover that buttercream came in varieties that were not cloyinging sweet and one dimensional in flavor.

    Just made it for my girlfriend's birthday, no modifications to the recipe except for halving everything! I'm not a good cake decorator and I don't have the proper tools but the strawberries on top carried the aesthetics of it! It looks beautiful!
