  • The foods and drinks delicious, the crafts are amazing, the place is cool 🔝👍👁‍🗨✨🔆🌀🌼⭐
  • I have lived here 20 yrs. August is busy for tourists national holiday for nearby El Salvador, tourists flood in this month from there, prices are higher. Same with Easter, majority of visitors are Central Americans then, but plenty of other visitors, rooms are in short supply, highest prices of the year. Christmas is also popular. Many capitalanos own weekend homes outside the center, we live in such a neighborhood, half the owners are capitalanos. So there are parties. Loads of restaurants and cuisines to serve the local tourism market and international visitors.at all price points. DO NOT LEAVE eithout tasting the ice cream full fat and delicious Pops is great IMO the best located in the corridor in front of the town market now...I love Brownie, Rum Raisin, and Dulce de Leche...the pint is a bargain if you want ICE CREAM they will hand pack it for you and they have little spoons. Saritas is good but not best, lots of flavors and more shops around all over the country. Nieves is another one, third pick for me. The walking salespeople are called andadores. If you WANT what they sell their prices are less than the shops. You can bargain a bit maybe offer 20% off, settle for 10% off, especially if buying in quantity or not. Know that almost ZERO of these sellers are despesrately poor. Many are cute schoolgirls from San Antonio Aguas Calientes they go home to channge their school uniforms at 1pm eat then to Antigua in tipica dress as it appeals more to tourists to make money for their teen shopping sprees for fun clothes etc. Virtually NONE are supporting desperate families. Sometimes tourists feel unwaranted pity..dont, these are happy girls having a good time, dont feel guilty! Most are happier and better adjusted than teen American girls I assure you. I am a psychologist, former psych professor U of Georgia and I KNOW these girls . A friend of mine was mayor of Aguas Cslientes for years...an MD his wife is a US trained nutritionist. HIS nieces did this so that is how I know .Not poor. So relax and enjoy. You can have a fine time on a budget which is how I came in '99 from our sailboat marin ed in the Rio Duñce for hurricane season. We planned to bus up to MX which we also love but no, Antigua and Antigueños captured my heart. We were backpacker toursits then. On a bigger budget you can have lujo boutique accomodations and restaurants for the price of midrange in Europe or NYC. And the boutique hotels are very special. Now older and more into comfort than low price, those are where I would stay. NOW, but I loved it here on the cheap too. In '99 we paid $50 a week for TWO three meals a day included to stay in the largest bedroom in that house next to La Merced where it says "YO love Antigua." We slowly became family members to that family and family we remain. It was 1999, I thought I had fallen into an Isabel Allende novel. I retired here fulltime in 2004 buying a local.property renovating it. Heaven. Enjoy your visit. BE SURE TO get up tp Tenedor del Cero to see the views have a snack or meal the BEST food and best views, some small museos plan a half day up there. You can take transport from Hotel Sto Domingo, almost no tourists visit...mostly for in the know locals. There, I gave you inside info and you will thank me later. ENJOY and guard your heart well or you may end up here someday too! There are WORSE fates!
