Advice I have given to a lot of people is "Ten sales is better than a Hundred likes"

Ace Ventura has never steered me wrong before...

"Any way will do" in context that people get stuck in a loop of searching the most efficient way but they end up not doing anything is a gold piece of advice. I would give thumbs up twice if I could.
  • Truly profound! Social media seems to be a productivity based culture, whereas until you get to the level to make money, you are making content to feed the social media beast. Who is always hungry.
  • One advantage of getting older is a lot of fear goes out the window. When I was younger I was sometimes fearful of what people really thought of my art. It would hinder me. Now at 60 I have let all of that go and now I rarely go a day without creating something. The great news is I have never stopped learning from other artists. Eventually you will find your niche. Try not to worry about the $$ or getting into a gallery. There are so many more options today that when I was in my 20's. Most importantly do not listen to critics. The only way you are going to find out your style or who you are is by creating whatever inspires you. The Universe or God will take care of the rest. Thank You Dries. Great video!

The 90/10 rule is a great one! I like to think about moving forward in imperfect progress. Your actions don't need to be perfect - just keep moving forward.

“All or nothing” is a nasty thought and gave me more problems than not. The 3 levels habit is pretty simple and straightforward plus can get me out of the procrastination I am guilty of. Thanks, bud, I needed this video.

This might be the most genuine and not sugar coated guide/tips to start art business and using social media to do the marketing. A lot of it also applies to other things a person wants to sell.

I feel torn about social media. It seems like a blessing to have the opportunity to reach so many people from home and make a business take off easily, but at the same time is overwhelming and time consuming. I needed to watch this video! Thanks.

I had a canvas haunting me for 10 years because I couldn't come up with a good enough technical solution to painting a texture. The painting was literally mocking me on a daily basis. It wasn't soul crushing, I moved on to other things, but I have this desire to own that bitch.

My takeaways: 10/90, 3 easy levels of habits. Don't be afraid of the thieves and jerks out there. Thanks for your insights, Dries. I've subscribed.

You nailed it. Just keep showing up and doing the work. Simple but so complex. So here I sit, watching YouTube instead of working in the studio.Thank you for sharing your insights.

"... is just a form of procrastination." Oh wow, did that call me out! It can be so true! I'm a brand new baby artist (just started painting November 2023 after decades of saying "I wish") who is constantly surprising myself by making art that not only do I like, other people seem to like too, but once I actually got ahold of some watercolors I spent a MONTH binging painting videos before I even took up the brush because I was afraid to start hahaha. This is an excellent video, thank you. The title drew me in, because I am absolutely an introvert without an audience haha. I was unaware of you before, but now I'm going down the rabbit hole! It's not procrastinating if I paint while I listen and learn! 😁

15:25 That Social Media confession... about how it changes you and your work. That really hit me. I think we all needed to hear that. And we need to hear it again tomorrow and every day that these platforms try to leech our ideas and time from us in exchange for pointless vanity metrics. Thanks for saying this so bluntly.

You are speaking to the part of me that hasn't been acknowledged even by myself because I thought I was being too sensitive and not tough enough. Stuck in the learning spiral, not sure where to start, wearing too many hats and haven't actually created my art in a few years. I am not a traditional artist by any means, I am a pattern maker in the fashion and costume industry trying to express myself online, but too afraid to do so. I've made art for others, but doing so for my own personal brand is debilitatingly overwhelming. 90:10 is something i'm definitely going to be implementing in my goals. Thank you, I just stumbled across your channel, but you are wildly brilliant, and YT algorithm needs to start putting your content out to more people. <3

Great video! The issue of spending so much time learning that you fail to produce art is so spot on. I'd never really associated it with procrastination, but that's exactly what it is. Also appreciated your take on producing for social media - its something I've always struggled with precisely because "they" tell you its the only way to sell your art. And just in case anyone happens to read this - I've sold close to 1,000 prints and custom artworks and have only had two people want their money back. So you're right not to worry about it Dries.

When I saw your hairstyle in the Youtube line-up I had to tune in as an inquiring introverted artist to your video. You're on fire. Crazy! LOL! Love your content! Thanks!
