Bleeding varices is a condition characterized by bleeding in abnormal vessels.
• Varices are abnormal connections between the systemic and portal circulation present in the body.
• The system circulation takes blood to and from the heart to supply all other organs in the body, while the portal circulation drains blood from the small intestine to pass through the liver before the rest of the body.
• The abnormal connections are weak and prone to more rupture, which is usually a medical emergency and can be life-threatening.
• Varices commonly occur in the venous system, but they may sometimes occur in arterial or lymphatic vessels.
• The most common site of varices is the esophagus although they can appear at other sites in the gastrointestinal such as the stomach, rectum, or around the belly button.
• If the bleeding is not controlled fast, a person may go to shock and eventually die.
• Serious complications such as coma, pneumonia, kidney failure, liver failure may occur even after the bleeding has been stopped.

This was hard for doctors to explain to me (around 19 years ago). No hepatitis, no drinking… it had to be the ARVs that I had been taking religiously since late 1991. The rubberbanding was unsuccessful and had to be redone with the TIPS. Thank you Massachusetts General Hospital IR. I had no idea that my liver was so sick and the bleed happened so fast. I got on the floor and called 911. I felt very faint. While monitoring my TIPS, they found cancer and treated me twice while waiting for a liver transplant. Now 8 ½ years post op and testing HTLVIII negative, I wonder why I tested positive and was given killer toxic medications that nearly killed me and almost nobody wants to listen.
  • It's difficult to explain the amount of blood you lose, it really is like a horror movie x
  • my father just died last feb. 2020 because of ruptured GE varices. He vomited large amount of blood..I was so shocked. I thought I could only see that kind of scenario in movies..We were both covered with his blood..the room became red...We were actually in the hospital when that happened.. Everything was very sudden. He just got up and went to the toilet to cough and then the coughing didn't stop..the blood came out from his mouth and nose like running water in the faucet..The last words he said was "I can't breathe" (gasping for air...I can see to his eyes that he was so scared) then he fell in my arms unconsciously..the even the nurses panicked...I and my mother was crying..The floor was like flooded with blood (literally...LOTS OF BLOOD😢😢)... Now, everytime I close my eyes, I can still remember that scenario that my father looked at me, spurting blood from his mouth and nose, gasping for air, fell in my arms..and died in arms...I Love Him so much😭😢
