This song is the feeling you get when walking through the light aisle at the Home Depot as a kid

It’s 1990 again. And I’m hanging out with my high school friend Bill Thearoux in Westchester California. We in route to Venice Beach and we’re listening to this song on KROQ radio…. It’s been 30 years since he’s been gone…. I miss you brother.

This song lives in my head for $38 a month. Which isn't rent free, but that's still pretty good.

It's a brand new record for 1990... and it never occurred to me that Birdhouse In Your Soul had a music video. Until today.
  • A pop song changing key 18 times, most pop songs never change key. At most once or twice, this song is quite the enigma; I’ve been listening to it for years, and I still keep finding little details in this song.

If you don't like this, it means you have no birdhouse in your soul.

Me and my dad driving up to see family in the weekend, blasting the whole album. This song was my favorite by far. Rip dad.
  • I took me forever to realize the song was about a nightlight and the lyric “There’s a picture opposite me, of my primitive ancestry, who stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free” is about a picture of a lighthouse. Love their song writing!

Never heard this before today and it’s easily becoming one of my favorite songs of all time

i would argue this is one of the greatest songs of the 90s

Birdhouse In Your Soul was the highest charting single in both the US and the UK for They Might Be Giants 📈. What's your #1 They Might Be Giants tune?

One of my friends had this played at his funeral in December 2022. I laughed and cried. It was so him. RIP JT ❤️
  • I truly believe this is one of the most underrated masterpieces of all time. I expected to see at least 100M views on this, not 390K, that makes me really sad.

my family was obsessed with they might be giants when i was a kid, to the point i actually started to hate the music because i was so sick of hearing it over again, but i always actually liked this one.

Some friends introduced me to They Might Be Giants when this album came out, and I've always loved this song. More than 30 years later, I've finally gotten to see the music video.
  • might be a little basic to say, but i do think this is one of my favorite music videos of theirs. it's so creative and silly, and the dramatic lighting motif with linnell is so interesting!

I grew up with this song— my dad (he recently turned 50) had DVDs of a bunch of their music videos. I watched their for-kids stuff like Here Comes Science, but this was my favorite in what I called the “Dad’s Might Be Giants” DVDs. I’m turning 20 next year, and this is my favorite song of all time. Dad and I are seeing them in concert in December after nearly a 3 year wait, haha! He’s seen them twice in concert before but this is my first time. This song always feels to me like a message from my younger self to the present day, to remember to always keep my head up and to “keep the nightlight on inside.”
