Melatonin and Mitochondria - What the Current Science says about "The Darkness Hormone"

    My lifetime migrains disappeared after using melatonin 6 years ago. The sinus induced inflammation slowly went away while using it every night.
  • I was exposed to nerve gas, hospitalized and unconscious. I have a "slow" ALS. Studies show people exposed to extent I was die from ALS at longest 20 years. I am 38 years from exposure. I have extreme muscle wasting , but have done all I can to hold it off through using herbs for regeneration of motor neurons - stem cells and more. It is very slow and relentless to keep up on it. I was also diagnosed Major Sleep Disorder , had cancer 3 times and fatal autoimmune (Diffuse Scleroderma) and more. Well, when I entered menopause the muscle wasting has been more rapid. It's getting treacherous. I believe melatonin, taken since age 25 has done a lot to slow the muscle wasting. I took it for sleep but KNEW intuitive that my strength would recover more when I started taking high dose. My muscles didn't recover to normal, it was subtle but sure. I NEEDED the melatonin to function mentally and physically. The mitochondria are damaged with Nerve Gas and ALS. This is the core of the muscle wasting that happens. As internet became available and pubmed, it afforded so much research to expand my protocol with natural substances. Fasting also in line with what this doctor is talking about (autophagy) was also core to my protocol early. There are many hundreds of studies on melatonins many effects in the body. Truly amazing - and it only costs $30 per year for the melatonin! I hope this testimony helps someone out there. If I had no problems and was young, I'd take melatonin regularly. Make sure you melt it in your mouth to liquid so that it works through your system as you sleep. Otherwise, you may be groggy the next day. The latter is what happened to me the times I tried it two years before melting it. Someone told me this, and I've been taking it ever since.
  • Melatonin is naturally occurring in lavender buds and the tips of Mulberry leaves about 3/4" down the tip. You will have a sound sleep with 1/4 of a tsp lavender bud in a 5 qt pot of tea.

    Ive been playing with low dose melatonin at night. Then recently got better results taking around 1PM. Now my experimentation is going to take a whole new tact. Thanks for the info Dr. Tayler. Subbing now.
  • Thank You 🙏 as a Long Covid sufferer I think this information may of just changed my life! I’d stumbled across the mitochondrial dysfunction whilst researching but this video has nailed every single issue with one supplement - time to up the melatonin dose!
  • I take 50mg (10mg tablets) fast release. I feel great. Right now it’s my sweet spot. I am 67 female. If I find that I’m waking up during the night (rarely), along with my 50mg fast release, i take a 10mg extended release. From listening to you, i did this for a while and went up to 70mg fast with a 10mg extended. I must have reset something because I haven’t needed that extended dosage and I decreased my dosage to 50mg. I also take 10,000iu of D3 daily. My D was dangerously low. I thought it was interesting how you stated that D and melatonin are hormones that regulate day and night. It all makes sense to me. I also take K2/mk7 because I want all that calcium put to the bones and not floating in my blood. My husband can only take 6mg fast release,anything more and he gets ultra vivid dreams.
  • I was also diagnosed with TBI from the Nerve Gas. Wow! Didn't know the melatonin was doing that for me. I slept 2-5 hours a week, Major Sleep Disorder, from the Nerve Gas Damage. After seven years brain damage, i finally started repairing and learned how to speak again - by myself, and by reading Scripture around the clock. I FORCED comprehending it step by step. Reading Scripture develops the brain. It has a cadence and is a poetry. It's brought people from second grade reading level to two years college. I didn't know that this was helping me either, outside of prayer. Science says it is impossible to repair the brain and nervous system after seven years. The herbs worked painstakingly slowly, but they did work after years and years of persisting.

    Very informative. Thank you. I take 180mg/night and feel nothing. The idea of going even higher sounds wild! I watched a video where a melatonin researcher, described as No. 1 in the world, said he takes 180mg and he doesn't know a single researcher who takes less than 100mg/night.
  • Excellent....!!!! At 69 yo and 51 kilos, I started 50mg melatonin for 1 week and going on. I get at least 7 hours of sleep, better than before the 20 mg, 30 mg, 40 mg per night. After exercise in the morning I take strong black coffee - no issue as yet.

    I am very interested in mechanisms of action for NIR induction of increased melatonin in mitochondrial in brain tissue via more exposure to daylight, as in 'forest bathing'. So, I'd really appreciate your take on NIR photobiomodulation with NIR light panel use , as research clarifies these mechanisms. Thanks for all your effort.

    I've been ill with ME/CFS for 42 years and have taken melatonin for more than 30 of those years and I am sure that I have been able to stay at a livable level is all due to higher dose melatonin. My husband I have both been taking close to 200 mg a day for all those years with not only no harmful effects but it has kept him very healthy at age 78 and helped me to find a level of living with this awful illness. I hope it becomes more readily available at higher milligrams so it is easier and less expensive to take in higher doses.

    Could you make a video about methylene blue?—another rockstar antioxidant that supercharges mitochondria. Since I’ve started supplementing with it, I unexpectedly & immediately experienced MUCH better and restful sleep. I have been combining it with getting some red light exposure (early morning & evening sun). The similarities between the melatonin and methylene blue are very interesting.
