Hook - Hanak H130 BL #16
Thread - Veevus GSP 30d White
Body - Snowshoe Olive
Wing one - Elk Hair
Wing two - Fish On Ultra Dry Yarn Brown
Sighter - Pink Aerowing
Head - Snowshoe

I really did not want to tie this, well certainly not #16! My poor old peepers cannae take it......lol.

I was asked by a few folks to tie it as I would fish it so here you go, I would use this in #14 - #18 and be happy that it will do a job for me. I call it the unsinkable because everything that I have lashed to the fine wired Hanak H130 naturally floats. That coupled with the treatment it gets before going in the fly box make it an extremely robust pattern in any kind of water.

Whats your go to fly for that quick pocket water? Let me know in the comments section below.

I really like this pattern it looks good and I bet it floats great . I do a similar fly but for the underwing just use the snow shoe rabbit once I have a bunch I treat them all with fly Agra and let them sit overnight. Float like cork . Alway a pleasure seeing your ties . Thanks for sharing

Lindsay just to put a bug in your ear about Rabbit's foot, have you tried patterns called "The Usual," and "The Haystack?" Both by Fran Bettors, but the only reason I bring it up is because you have Rabbits foot available. This pattern you are building is a great floater! Well tied and I agree I don't think you could sink it without a lot of effort!

A great wee fly. Worth adding some to the Stillwater box in case the sedge are on the smaller size. Worse case if never used in sixty years time they could be mini retirers. Lol
  • I like the pattern but, I used the amount fo deer hair you suggested and found it to be tooooooo much .So I cut it in half and worked out just fine . In stead of a cent. I used 1/2 that.

Unsinkable indeed. Well, perhaps adding little foam outriggers might make it more so? ;-) Snowshoe rabbit is wonderful material. I initially learned to tie from books & pictures of flies in catalogs. Everything looked neat & tidy. When I first tried to tie a fly called ā€œThe Usualā€ using snowshoe rabbit, I was appalled by how unruly & disorganized it looked. It took a while to learn that was an advantage. This fly is like a more refined cousin of The Usual with elk hair invited to the party. Definitely a keeper.
