BE HONEST! How many did you get wrong???? Were you as surprised as I was?
  • @kyletaylor73
I think 95% of people who aren't videographers/photographers will not even tell a difference. I think we often forget we all have trained eyes for this stuff.
  • I really struggled, because of quick transitions, but it really struck me that the close ups were sharp and great colours and I didn't feel there was significant differences in most of the shots - I'm impressed, but I also suspect the ARRI is much more flexible for different lighting conditions.

It isn't the quality or price. Even if the Arri rig was $1500, I wouldn't buy it because I would never carry it around. The iPhone isn't just good enough it is good. I am not filming at the level expected in feature films, but I have more than 1100 videos posted on YT and the iPhone is all around the best for my needs as a creator. Good video, I enjoyed it.😎🤙

I use iPhones and Sony Cine line cameras regularly, so for me the iPhone stood out pretty well for me in each clip. As others have commented, over-sharpened images, stabilization/color differences, etc, are a dead giveaway for someone with a trained eye; that being said, if you didn't know what you were looking for you'd probably miss it unless you really took the time with comparisons. I will admit to having done pick-up shots and emergency shots with an iPhone 14 Pro, and nobody (paying clients and youtube subscribers alike) has ever mentioned to me any noticeable difference (I do shoot in prores with an ND filter and use Protake/FilmicPro, for full disclosure). It is indeed pretty rad that we're at a point in time where you really don't need anything but the phone in your pocket and a little technique and knowledge to make some great work.

Always love seeing the bro collab. When I started my photo/video journey, it was all around nerding out with my bros and trying to figure out what the hell aperture actually did before social media and YouTube was ever a thing. :)
  • @woodypaul_
the two tells are the sharpening and the color cast. Phones usually try and be tack sharp and with cinema cameras there's a softness and warmth to it.
  • @BenjaminOrtega
Can we take a second to also appreciate your grading brother! It’s blowing my mind more and more every time 🤝🏻😎

Actually Arri does have kinda computational DR in the sense that it has a separate photosite readout in the sensor for just capturing the highlights info and a separate photosite readout that just capture the mids and shadows which then gets stiched up into a 16 bit file image that's why you get those crazy highlight rolls offs, its called a dual gain architecture something that the Canon C70 has adopted as well.

Please folks - don't forget - these wonderful daylight/lots of sun shots are great on an iPhone, since iPhone 11. And on the 1X lenses, even better. But for events, most of the shots are not on daylight. For sure Matti will do a NIGHT shot comparison between Arri and iPhone 15 Pro Max. I remember when I bought the iPhone 7 to travel to Las Vegas, based on a shot comparison with a Leica shot. On daylight, everything is wonderful.
  • @toadlguy
What I think is amazing is that you can use both together without the difference being very noticeable. I wonder how many commercial shoots or films will start using the iPhone to get interesting shots you couldn’t otherwise get.
  • The difference on image quality is not so big as the price difference. That’s crazy!
  • @mindbomb2000
I absolutely love your conclusion. If you can't make good, compelling stories on an iPhone, the Arri won't help. But if you get the chance to film on an Arri you can transfer the skill you've learned, and make your storytelling even better.
  • @zacutousa
Yes!! Totally agree, best beginner camera for sure!
  • @TeppoHaapoja
The only difference I see is one camera makes me more handsome 🔥
  • @zfilmsph
I think the biggest take away is the depth of field and stabilization like you said. I wonder how much more difficult it would be to spot the difference if a comparison between the 2 that removes those variables. Like put those on a tripod, shot side by side, adjust focal length of the arri to match as much as possible the shot from the iphone, etc etc.
  • @IEBATechThoughts
Love this. Smash them together and you prove that, unless pixel peeping, with long shots, you can't tell. Another "tell" is that the phone continually adjusts the color science in the shot.
  • At age 65 as a new filmmaker, I was guessing on most of them! Great video! I have a Canon EOS C70 and three L Series lenses. Finally fulfilling my passion for filmmaking! Thanks for all you do!
  • @neloukeramati
I cannot express how much value I got out of this video. I was on the fence because I was getting gorgeous footage from my 15 Pro Max and was concerned that due to lack of bokeh you get from pro cameras that my footage wasn't 'professional' enough. But with the Blackmagic Camera App, shooting in log, using tele photo lens attachments and/or getting close enough to my subject to get nice DOF... not to mention getting about 75% of my guesses wrong with respect to Arri vs iPhone despite knowing enough about cinematography... made me feel so relieved that I can continue to work with my current setup until I can afford an upgrade. Thank you so much for this awesome video!
