Her face is so expressive! When she takes off her gloves, priceless!

My Great Louise was a stripper and torch singer and great friends with Gypsy during the burlesque days. Mom lived with Aunt Louise for several years and she and Gypsy maintained their friendship through the years. Gypsy was a great and very funny lady.

I saw Gypsy on Broadway when Ethel Merman was still starring in it.

"Are you a Female?" "yes, there's never been any doubt before" lol This was such fun! Thanks for sharing this.

These folks always seem to be having so much fun with each other.

I'm surprised (unless there's something I don't know) that she didn't do more TV. The woman had charisma out the wazoo!

Wow, so this is the real Gypsy Rose Lee. I saw the movie and it was amazing! She was one sultry burlesque queen!

Watch her eyes...pure stage seductress. Absolutely brilliant facial expressions. She knows what she's doing.

A good illustration of "stripping," Gypsy Rose Lee style, is from 0.36 to 0.44, when she removes her gloves: the playful way she looks at Daly, then twirls the gloves around, then blows at them as she daintily drops them. Flirting and creating a warm feeling (a strip TEASER, as she says) as opposed to "being nasty". Nonetheless, John Daly seems as uncomfortable as a Calvinist preacher next to her. PS The first time I saw this video, I absolutely adored her. :-)
  • Her facial expressions and the bits of business she uses are all rooted in vaudeville. Clever, funny girl.

Hard to believe there are many people who don't know that the great musical 'Gypsy' is based on a real person and this is her. She was delightful if a little rough around the edges.

I watched her morning talk show, Gypsy, on San Francisco’s KGO TV as often as I could. She had a great sense of humor; her show was wonderful. Her son was on it several times. I was shocked and saddened when she passed away at 59. What an entertainer!

From whatÍ've heard in that era she didn't take everything off.

8 o clock is a terrible hour in the morning, Damn. I have to get up at 6 o clock every morning.

Part of the reason for the surprise that a "stripper" would be so loved is that Gypsy Rose Lee might be better described as a singer and dancer who took her clothes off (usually) down to a decent but minimal level before going off stage (as one site says, "rarely included totaly nudity"; apparently being topless is included in that category). In GRL's era, "stripping" would have been teasing, flirting, smiling, batting eyelashes. Today it would be provoking sexually by body movements and nudity.
