I counted my clothes and was really surprised! (Honest Wardrobe Declutter)

Published 2024-07-19
When I returned from Italy last week, I was unpacking my suitcase and I could see all my winter and summer clothes out in one place. It was a total mess and very overwhelming. It made me think that it was time for a wardrobe declutter!

I decided to count how many pieces of clothing I had (because it felt like it was the most I had had in a while!) The results stunned me a little bit. I proceeded with the declutter and made sure I was honest with myself throughout it.

Play this video in the background while you declutter for some motivation and encouragement! I hope you enjoy x

  • Everyone’s perception of what’s a lot and what’s not is going to be different, ❤ so please don’t feel any guilt if you have more than me. The main reason I was shocked by my number is because I’ve intentionally tried to be more minimal over the past few years, and have done so much closet curation, so I assumed it would be less than that 🥰 I’m glad you guys are enjoying the vid though, and also are big fans of Caroline. Haha. Xoxo

Raise your hand if you own more than 183 clothing items?! ✋🙄 Am I the only one? 🤣
  • Fanta is adorable and gorgeous - thanks for sharing him with us in your videos.
  • I have 270 not including accessories and swimsuits. I have collected vintage hats and earrings since I was 25 and I am 60 now so I have a lot but I do wear it because I love it. And I have decluttered 😂😂😂 I look forward to your videos every week or when you can post. Can’t wait for shoes 👠

I really feel that clothes are important to me and me only. I don’t care what anyone average person owns how many pieces. I owned a lot less when I couldn’t afford to have a lot, now I can and I own more BUT I’m trying to be conscious about what I bring in to my closet. It works for me and I’m grateful that I have beautiful yet affordable pieces.
  • A really honest video! Living in Quebec (very cold in winter, hot in summer), I tend to declutter twice a year. As I prepare an item of clothing for storage, I think about how many times I reached for it. If a piece was never worn or only worn once or twice, it may be time to declutter it. I also try to identify the reason why some clothes remain unworn - too small, too big, wrong color, wrong neckline etc. I try to learn from purchases that didn't work for me. Not sure I'm brave enough to count all the items in my wardrobe.... Perhaps after I've retired....
  • I too love Caroline and have been binging her content lately for interior design and general shinanigans. 💗 Thank you for this video! Very much enjoy it.
  • Emily, I love your content! Honestly so different and useful compared to many other fashion Youtuber's on here. I feel like every outfit I see you in is part of my dream wardrobe wishlist. I just checked and I'm at 93 items! Trying to get down to 50 but that's ambitious in Canada :| P.S. Caroline is awesome love her content too
  • This was such a great video that it motivated me to declutter my wardobe!! In my head I thought there was nothing in my wardrobe that needed to go, but then when I looked through it I made a pile to go! And I also found some clothes I hadn't worn in ages 🤦🏽‍♀️
  • I love how you curate your closest and I love your videos but for me who is 74 years old I have collected all Italian leather handbags since 1969 and I use them all and same for my clothing. I love and enjoy every piece and my personal style has stayed the same for all these years. Classic, Glam and always a belt I am fortunate enough to have a walk in “boutique” I call it in my home and I shop it everyday….happy Saturday

First😂🎉🎉lets do it!🤗 dont google it, it doesnt matter what others think its a lot. If you feel that its too much and it doesnt make you happy, get rid of things you dont see yourself wearing anymore and be honest. Loved the kitty😂

I love Caroline Winkler's content. So kind of you to mention her Emily. I always enjoy your content as well and your soothing voice 💕 😊
  • @nmarzuke
I love that you’ve decided to get rid of items that you are not wearing…especially those items that you only use for styling. It is a more honest and realistic approach and that is something I can truly appreciate.
  • @bettismyth
Thank you for the inspiration! I have my wardrobe digitalised and not even all the shirts are on there. I started off with 235 items. After being ruthless and repeating the mantra "Am I really wearing this?" I got it down to 198 items 🥳 now following suit and actually removing all the removed items from my actual wardrobe. However, I feel I'm struggling to follow through with shoes and bags, as I feel both give me the opportunity to style my outfits in different ways. Maybe I'll get to them another time 😊
  • Hello Emily! very good video! I was just cleaning out my closet when you posted the video. I finally decided and took out clothes that I never liked but that I was forced to wear just because they were there. I could sell something but the truth is that I want to get these things out of my house. Thank you for the content you create, it is very useful! Big hug!
  • @wendys243
I love your honesty Emily! You have set a good example for all of us in terms of what we REALLY reach for and use in our closet. And how true how a second and third “pass” of our clothing or household items often results in decisions to part with things. I love it! You have motivated me to do a count of my clothing and shoe items going forward. Thanks for your content. You are sweet and engaging! Hot summer here in Winnipeg, Canada🇨🇦

For my own future reference — 219 including office and casual clothes, bags, shoes, outerwear, sleepwear, loungewear & active wear, excluding accessories: belts, scarves, watches, jewellery, hats & sunnies (though admittedly I don’t have that many accessories- they all will fit one average sized packing cube). I also have at least a dozen that I have recorded in my “parking lot” for selling, donation or to revisit in the next season (winter in my case). I love this very honest declutter video!! No pretence of knowing certain rules and no judgment. I think that it’s not about a number of what’s acceptably minimal or excessively maximalist. The important thing is we keep only what we genuinely love and what makes us happy. I have about six items that I keep either for sentimental reasons or to appreciate the art that went into making them. One last thing — we can take the slow but steady journey. Our styles evolve. We don’t want to be impulsive about decluttering either or else we risk regretting it or the vicious cycle of bringing the same things back without truly understanding the ‘why’. Good luck all on our respective decluttering journey!! 😊

I am not proud about the amount of clothes I have collected over the last 3 decades, but not counting shoes, underwear and socks, I have over 500 pieces. Yes, you read right. Some are one of a kind since they were custom made for me.
  • Thank you Emily! 😊I own a lot more than you do and I declutter every season. I am in the process of reevaluating my wardrobe as I am now semi-retired and definitely do not need as much. However, I work in a corporate environment and I love fashion too! It's an ongoing process and different for everyone. It was nice to see Fanta! 🥰
  • I find myself really searching for your videos each week and being inspired to get real with my wardrobe. Thank you Emily.
