Making Arcane "canon" is a bad idea, and probably not actually possible

Of course, the moment I try to promote a new channel, YouTube takes it down with an automated removal for "scams and deceptive practises" which... >deep sigh< seems to be some kind of automated system catching a false flag or something. I've appealed the removal, I have no idea if the channel will be restored or if YouTube decides to double down. I'll keep you posted.

TBSkyren: To make it work you would have to kill Legends of Runeterra Riot: Way ahead of you pal.
  • Can we get an extended cut of you just saying "Mage" over and over again over all of the LoR mage cards? 🔧
  • @xabierarana2645
Riot games: Ok, you are alowed to make use of the universe of runeterra as long as you dont contradict the cannon. Artist: Nice, were can i find the cannon story so i make sure i dont contradict it? Riot games: WOWOWOWOW slow down a bit.

I thought there’s lines in arcane about how the Piltover people all rallied together because they didn’t like magic, hence why Piltover itself is a low magic setting until hextech is invented. I didn’t think that meant every other setting was now also low magic.

🔨 I can't remember how it was stated in the show, but was it ever made explicit that magic wasn't available in Runeterra? My impression was that Jayce just managed to harness magic with technology when it wasn't possible before

Ekko deadass may be the deciding factor on how this whole canon thing goes.
  • The day Ekko's "Lullaby" short story is made non-canon is the day I riot 🔨

    I miss Riot Forge already.âš’

Not to mention, Arcane is not focusing on world building, but deep character drama. It's by far some of the best character writing Riot ever did and if it becomes completely canon, mostly every story afterwards will pale in comparison.

My biggest problem is how to make Camille canon. Piltover and Zaun specifically being very non magical I could just about let slide. But Camile only works if hextech has been around for at least 70 years. What a mess.

🔨That's exactly what I said to myself when I first watched Arcane. It's hard to think that Ionia or Targon exists in the same universe. When they announced it would be canon I thought they were at least going to change champion bios and expand a bit on the decision but... nothing. And with the recent layouts I doubt the lore changes anytime soon. At this point the MMO is my last hope. Great video as usual !

🛠️ As someone who works really hard on creating a fleshed out world for my D&D players, I want you to know that your videos have been immeasurably impactful on my passion for good worldbuilding and iteration on fantasy universes. Thanks for all the work you put into these videos, they have taught me so much!

One thing I don't think Riot has considered is how Arcane's lore affects League's Champions as marketable characters, which given they're behaviour as a money grubbing company you'd think that's something they would care about. When Arcane does officially become "canon", would the Champion voice lines not need to be updated to fit them? In which case would we not have a situation where Vi is talking about how much she hates being an enforcer, Viktor waxes poetic about the ethics of scientific advancement and Jinx becomes a walking ball of depression, tragedy and insanity (insanity in a sad way, not the lol so random XD kinda way). Jinx is pretty much the face of League, or at the very least the face of Wild Rift, and she got that status by being incredibly marketable. Arcane Jinx is many things but she isn't that kind of mascot, she isn't a wacky, insane person who loves to create elaborate schemes of destruction and spectacle just for the funsies. Arcane's characters are amazing characters within the show they were created for, but they are not ideal characters for a fun MOBA.

đź›  World Building âš’The only way I can see them retconning something similar to existing Runeterra into the Arcane universe is if they triple down on the concept introduced in Jayce's trial which is to say that they turn Piltover at the time of Arcane into a Demacia style anti-magic state, which somehow has a Yordle as it's leader(?!). They could then relax that for "reasons" during season 2 and allow the other champions who are magic users in Piltover / Zaun to become canon thereafter.

I have a strong desire for the “Mage, mage, mage…” extended cut. 🛠
  • @skyboy7244
🔨 your point about Zeri, Seraphine and Ezreal really stuck in my head. Integrating just those three characters into an “arcane” style universe would already be difficult (not impossible, I can definitely imagine somthing interesting about this trio of natural mage kids in a city dominated by magic-tech ) so trying to adapt the entire universe to fit arcane seems destined to being, at best, massively mismanaged .
  • @b-sidecassette
having Arcane and LoL become one canon would be like having the main continuity Batman comics align with the Lego Batman games, including the toon physics

The "Mage" bit is glorious. And the fade out of the bit is really wonderfully editing. Amazing video.
