Destiny 2 - The Full Story of Emperor Calus

This is the entire story and lore of Calus that we have had so far in in-game events.

Overview:
Calus was the former emperor of the Cabal people on their homeward of Torobatl. However, he was overthrown by Ghaul, the Red Legion and other conspirators including his own daughter, Caiatl who, in present day, is implied to be the new leader of the Red Legion as of Season of the Worthy. These conspirators overthrew him in an event known as the "Midnight Coup". However, Calus wouldn't die, and since he was so beloved by the people, Ghaul and the other conspirators exiled Calus aboard the Leviathan on a fixed course through deep space. Eventually, Calus, isolated on his Leviathan, would become deeply depressed and his will to live was all but diminished. But, then he reached a place in space that was uncharted and left the safety of the Leviathan's interior to investigate a disturbance for himself. In this moment, he stares into a vast void of nothingness before seeing The Darkness (aka the Pyramid Ships) destroying everyone and everything. This vision shown by the void changed Calus, and he decided to start living life to the fullest and has made it his goal to seek out shadows to stand at his side when The End comes and he wishes to be the last being alive when the universe Collapses. He would eventually would take an interest in us, after all his shadows were unable to kill Ghaul but we were able to do the impossible. Ever since, he'd invite us to explore his Leviathan in the hope of making us the Shadow of Earth. In Penumbra (aka Season of Opulence), he would create a bather who was strong of will and mind, named Gahlran. Who was meant to bear a Hive artifact that Cauls discovered on a Hive war moon called the "Crown of Sorrow". Cauls made Gahlran wear the crown so that Calus could have agency over the Hive. However, the Crown was a trap set by the witch queen, Savathun and the viral language inscribed within the helmet would drive Gahlran mad and would transform into nothing more than a puppet for The Witch Queen. Eventually, we would put Gahlran out of his misery and Calus remarks that we will need the Crown of Sorrow when "The End" comes and that the future can not be fought. After this, the Crown of Sorrow would split the Leviathan between our reality and the Ascendant Plane, which is accessed in the Tribute Hall as part of the Bad Juju quest which Calus' loyalists are sent in to recover in the Ascendant Plane. In the end, Calus will play a large role when The End comes and I believe, with the release of Beyond Light and the fact that all Leviathan raids are going away, that Calus will pull his Leviathan back to Torobatl to face his traitorous daughter Caiatl and I do not believe we will see Calus again until the Lightfall expansion in 2022.

You're forgetting a few things but I shall add them here: Calus has not been seen by anyone since his trip into the void and the Calus we face in The Leviathan is a robot, one of many in fact. Calus had his scribes create the Chronicron a sort of "fan fiction" of how he sees us acting as his shadow but it nothing more than propaganda. Calus may have ties to the nine but it unclear if he actually communicates with them. Calus's drink is actually made of ground up planets and had we not proven ourselves, Nessus would have been the next brew. Calus also seems to enjoy mocking Mara Sov and has an entire Menagerie encounter dedicated in mocking her.

This Calus guy is such a cool dude. I sure hope he doesn’t join up with our worst enemy in the future

I noticed how differently Calus talks as his appearances went on. In the Leviathan Raid his speech was very exaggerated and joyful but more recently in his appearance in the season of the haunted his speech is very low growling and intimidating as if the character he played as the ‘opulent’ emperor that looked to sway us has served its purpose and the real Calus is showing through

Man the Leviathan was so cool. I wish I got to play it more.

Something important to notice at 3:38 is how Calus states, "There is power in this universe beyond your feeble light. I'll leave you with those words," implying that perhaps Calus might have known about the pyramids early on. Probably a stretch, but I thought it was cool, considering how Calus was used in Lightfall.

With Calus making his full reappearance in Lightfall they should totally reprise Leviathan at some point. I want the armor so bad.
  • @Maybeyoudorho
I came here to see if all his messages sounded like he’s hitting on us or what because I blindsided during the Sever- Shame mission- UGGGHHHHH HE IS???
  • Seems like a nice guy in a sort of sociopathic hedonist sort of way.

And now we can barely explore the ship and it's once lusterious halls are all ruined. Damn shame :(
