Living in France: The Good, the Glam, and the Reality | My Vlog Series Premiere

Published 2024-03-22
Welcome to the debut of my newest vlog series, a candid window into my life as an American navigating the charming complexities of France. For years, I've shared daily snippets of my experiences with my husband, keeping him looped into the intricate details of my day-to-day adventures. These personal updates have now blossomed into something more—a vlog series meant to guide, inspire, and resonate with those of you dreaming of, or planning on, making this beautiful country your home.

Living in France is a tapestry of experiences—vastly different and more nuanced than the glossy portrayals often seen online. With this series, I peel back the curtain on the romanticized image of life in France to share a raw, unfiltered glimpse of my reality. It's not just about the aesthetic cafés and picturesque streets; it's about the real challenges, the unexpected joys, and the personal growth that comes from making a life in a country so rich in culture yet so different from my own roots.

In a world where authenticity is becoming ever more cherished, I embrace the imperfect, the unedited, and the genuine. Some of my videos might tilt more towards the vertical, some might not be as polished, but each one is a truthful piece of my life puzzle. This is not just content; it's a legacy—a collection of moments capturing the essence of an extraordinary, albeit sometimes bewildering, expatriate life.

While this weekly vlog series is a personal journey, fear not, for my passion for guiding and inspiring through tours and travel content continues unwaveringly. This series is an addition to the vibrant tapestry of guides, itineraries, and stories I plan to share this year. Join me as I navigate both the wonders and the realities of living in France, offering a mentorship through my lens, and perhaps, helping you find your own path in this enchanting land.

Thank you for being here, for listening, and for embarking on this journey with me. Let's explore the real France together, beyond the postcard images, into the heart of what makes this life so uniquely challenging and beautiful.

Bienvenue to our community! For our newest members, I am sharing a brief collection of FAQs here. With the new vlogging style format, I’m receiving a lot of repeat questions or ones that our long-time members already know.

I am pinning this to the top of my Instagram page for easy reference and turning off comments on this particular post. Merci!

I receive this question in a variety of formats similar to this...
Q1: What do you do? How long have you lived in France? How did you get your Visa?

A1: My story and visa journey are linked in my bio on Instagram or found on my website, www.ThisFrench.Life.

Q2: Is your husband French?
A2: No, he’s American. Both he and my adult son currently live and work in the States. Mr. can’t work from France at the moment but visits frequently. Kiddo was going to uni in Lyon and lived with me in France during Covid but moved back for a job opportunity after.

Q3: Where do you live?
A3: I prefer to split my time between Paris and Bretagne, but also travel a lot throughout France for my work.

Q4: Can you share a tour of your house?
A4: Thank you for asking. But at the beginning of this journey, my family and I decided to politely decline requests on these topics for privacy and security reasons:
Tours or locations of our homes
Health and financial questions
Images of family members

Q5: Did you travel to France with your French bulldogs?
A5: No, Pearl and Rose were born here in France.

Q6: So, you live alone? Do you take care of your property and gardens by yourself?
A6: Yes, and yes! But I have great neighbors who are farmers with big tractors, and they help out with big projects. I also have a friend who aids me with projects I am not quite strong enough to manage, like cutting a tree. But otherwise, yes, I am a very independent person.

Q7: What’s your skincare routine?
A7: Brands I love are…

@thalgo_france
@resultime
@skinceuticals

But what really works for me is:
@vaselinebrand cocoa butter and
Sunscreen with lots of no makeup days
Plus antibacterial cream at night.

    Shannon! I loved spending this week with you! Thanks for sharing bits of your every day life; this format is excellent.
  • @MilesAwaywithUs
    Yes! This will be such a hit! Real life everyday expat stuff for the win! 🙌
  • This is a great idea! The other channels I am following are usually travel vlogs or expats renovating properties. I love the idea that you are working at the same time of sharing your life as an expat.

    I love this format! ❤ Thank you!
  • @tricias1227

  • @YoureMadeOfLove
    I'm going to agree with you about the marchés, I though I was alone in that.
  • @YoureMadeOfLove
    I would agree with the pet friendly locations thing. I have been turned away from so many places of business and public parks.
  • @vinvintage1280
    The caterpillars scare me. Another blogger I follow had a close encounter with her dog. Luckily they didn't get stung
  • @YoureMadeOfLove
    Ummmmmm...I did not know about the caterpillars. My neighborhood is covered in oak and pine trees too. Merci!
