Things that Arent here anymore

  • Speaking of "Things That Aren't Here Anymore", it truly is a shame that KCET or PBS doesn't show this anymore because it truly was one of the best documentaries to appear on the network. And "More Things That Aren't Here Anymore" is even rarer to find.
  • Watching this as a 62 year old really tears me up.. what a DECLINE in decency in our once beautiful, simplified, elegant society.

Working with Ralph is one of my favorite memories. After we left KNX,the CBS Radio station in L.A.,we went our separate ways but retained a 40 year friendship. He was a great guy, loyal friend a consummate professional journalist.
  • Loved Ralph Story and miss him. He was a P-51 fighter pilot in Europe during WWII, but he never wanted to talk about it. One of The Greatest Generation and a gift to us all.

Born in Burbank in '45. Grew up in the valley in one of the most famous times in California. We had Helms Bakery Truck and Good Humor Ice Cream truck. Bobs Big Boy Drive In, Van Nuys Blvd. , Ventura Blvd. Sportsman Lodge, Dupars, Curries Ice Cream. We moved from Burbank to Studio City in '54. Walter Reed Jr High, NorthHollywood High. Very lucky to have lived in the Valley.
  • Thank goodness someone recognized the value of saving these pieces of the past for those who never experienced it. Thank you!

I burst into tears when I saw the Bullocks Wilshire store. In 1974 and 1975 I worked as a runway model for men's fashion during their Spring and Fall shows in the Tea Room. They had a very large men's department with some of the finest clothing you could buy. I mean it quite literally, this was a memory that brought tears to my eyes. The best years of my life were spent in Los Angeles.
  • Now Mr. Ralph Story is one among the Great Things That Aren't Here Anymore. Thank you Ralph Story..

They were indeed the good ole days, to have goods and services delivered right to your door I remember doctors used to make house calls and your docter actually knew you and your health issues and get this he actually cared.

What a trip down memory lane!  Born and raised in Los Angeles in1942. Ralph Story was one my favorites.  Ralph Story's Los Angeles.  They were the "good old days"!  No the Los Angeles of today.  That's why I live in Oregon.

Yes, they were the good old days of my grandparents, parents and my childhood. Our culture is so crass now.

The Helm's bakery truck use to come down my street in Pasadena in the 50s. I had to run after it, and around the corner it stopped so I could buy their cup cakes for a nickel. So good. When we drove to my grandparent's home in Culver City, we would most likely stop at the bakery itself and buy bread and doughnuts in their company store. Such great memories.
  • We don't appreciate people who we love until they are gone. We need to count our blessings , before they are gone .

An era that was amazing, wholesome, and simpler. Decency, pride of achievement, family, respectability and community. when men where men and women where women and respected. An atmosphere that children of today will never understand or experience since children in that time experienced something so unique. A bygone era which will never come back and I wish I had been born then.

My father in law was a Helms bakery driver for 30 years in Venice. My wife and I still have a beautiful classic antique mirror given to her parents upon her birth by Mr Helms personally. That's how things were in those days.

When I watch programs like this it makes me feel like I belong here.. like I am missing something or a feeling of loss.. its incredible how watching things about the early 1900s that make me feel this way... maybe I lived another life in another time..who knows...but this is just beautiful...thank you for sharing this...

Wow, I never thought anyone remembered but me about Clifton's Cafeteria. My mom would take me there circa 1957, I was a little boy of 6 years. They use to have a Treasure chest that kids, after dinner received a ticket to reach in and get a gift. AND I actually got a signed photo when I met Larry , Moe and Curly their. (lost the photo, darn it.)
  • The Helm's Man! Drove his yellow truck down Hollenbeck Street in Huntington Park, and then San Gabriel Avenue in South Gate.... I'll never forget the sound of that whistle, standing on the curb waiting, with my grandma's list pinned in my pocket, so l wouldn't lose it. Just before he closed those long wooden drawers, he put two strawberry cream puffs in one the little white bags for me and my sister.......🤗
