Most Americans don't really 'get' beans on toast as a meal, yet it's one of Britain's greatest culinary staples. Freshly buttered hot toast, hot baked beans piled on top and a knob of butter dropped onto the beans. When I was a kid (many, many moons ago) the main brand on sale was always Heinz, but HP was more widely available then and in my opinion was a nicer baked bean than Heinz. Another brand that used to be on the shelves was Crosse and Blackwell, but I haven't seen those in years. Branston - whilst being a long established brand name - only started making baked beans fairly recently. But they're noticeably better than Heinz, but even some of the supermarket own label beans are better than Heinz.

Branston Baked Beans (my favourite too) used to be Crosse & Blackwell, but changed when the brand was sold off a few years ago.

Thanks for the great shoutout! We really appreciate it! 😍😍
  • Me and kieron always say that when we retire/ we will eat beans on toast every day- love it!!!!!
  • Since my all-time favorite British tv show is As Time Goes By, the topic of beans on toast and cheese and pickle sandwiches are a common reference made (aside from the ever popular Shepherd's Pie), I found this episode to be extremely relevant AND fun!! Thank you both for the taste tests and the final determination...Branston it is!! Thank you, Dara and Christa...

I love that the Branston beans both taste better and have less salt, tinned foods typically have way too much salt and I haven't bothered with the HP beans for this reason - far more salt.

Good video again by the way, thank you. Just to mention your husband was spot on, grated cheese on hot beans and toast, SO delicious. Since Heinz have seemed to have taken the pi** of the current 'fuel/cost of living issue' and started to charge a silly amount of money for a tin of their beans, I did a blind taste test of Heinz v Sainsburys v ASDA home brand beans. And the winner was.... the cheaper home brands as my wife could not tell any difference. Now this is someone who can tell the difference between Daddies and HP, Colman's English mustard and all other 'yuck' versions, Branston Pickle v other varieties etc etc.

So happy you had such a great time making this video. We definitely could tell! We had fun watching too.
  • I think a lot of Americans think beans on toast and associate the beans with barbecue or cookout beans....in America the beans most eaten at cook outs and barbecues are molasses based sauces similar to Boston Baked beans and are way sweeter than what the British use. (I believe their beens are tomato based.) Personally I think the tomato based sauces would probably taste better on toast than the sweeter molasses based ones.

Totally agree Branston beans are the best. I wish more people would use these rather than Heinz when doing first try tests, as well as some grilled cheese on top.
  • @SharisaLewis
I love both these classy ladies. Laughed out loud that Cheese unites you, despite your differences. The side commentator is the best. I don't feel like you sell us on beans on toast here. Can we get an updated video with the cheese on it?

  • @nigelgunn322
HP actually does a FRUITY brown sause as well as the traditional brown sauce.
  • @leedshunk
I'm not sure what entertained me more , the taste test or the baracking of your hubby - hilarious 🤣👍
  • Branston beans are the king of beans. I have my beans on toast on buttered Warburtons white bread, a couple of runny yolk fried eggs on top and plenty of HP sauce, delicious.
