Allegheny Portage National Historic Site - Railroad History

Published 2022-07-25
In this episode we explore the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historical site at the summit of the Allegheny Mountains in south-central Pennsylvania. We walk through the visitor center, with commentary, then take a short walk to the outdoor exhibits at the summit of the eastern series of inclined planes that lifted people and cargo from the canal to the top of the mountain. We conclude with a stop at a civil engineering landmark, the stone skewed arch bridge that once carried the old highway over the incline.

I have visited this site twice, but it has been more than 10 years since I last saw it. It really is an excellent visitor's center and recreation. Thanks for giving me the chance to visit it again!

Last year we visited incline planes for canals in NE PA and NJ. This year we are headed to western PA and will be stopping by this location. Thank you for preview.
