Vila Nova de Gaia or commonly referred to as Gaia is on the other side of the Douro River from Porto in Portugal. Often times people say that it's a good place to live because it's cheaper and gives you more space. Gaia is quite large with a bit of a city feel, the relaxed river vibe, and a variety of beaches along the Atlantic Coast. There are plenty of port wine houses to explore as well. However, it's quite hilly, less walkable, and very spread out. Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere break down what life would be like in Gaia along with things to do, housing, the weather, and much more.

* ABOUT US *
Josh and Kalie left the US for a life abroad in 2009 and haven't looked back. They have lived in Spain, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and are currently in Portugal. Yes, they realize they only moved to countries starting with the letter "S" until they spoiled that streak with their move to Portugal. Follow ExpatsEverywhere as we aim to get information to you through expat interviews, city breakdowns, expat life, travel, vlogs, and more.

Great video about my city but, you miss some key points, Gaia has two shopping malls, in almost every village you have a median size supermarket like pingo doce, continente, lidl etc. You don't have to walk that much to find a supermarket. Public school's give free books and money for school material. We have a big park called Lavandeira, a zoo quinta de santo Inácio, and a biology Park called parque biologico de Avintes, amazing river boat trips, river beaches ⛱, that's so much more in Gaia to see.

My Husband and I purchased a renovated apt on the Avenida da Republica in 2018 and absolutely love it. We feel like we're on the edge of the touristy area right by Jardim do Morrow, Serra Pillar (the monastery), the cable car, and the beautiful Pt Luis bridge. We don't have a car and have become comfortable with the buses as well as metro. There is a small Mini Presso grocery right accross from us, as well as a Contenente and a Pingo grocery a few metro stops away, and the bigger grocery at El Cortes Ingles. We live on the first floor above a cafe that serves excellent coffee and Portuguese traditional food. We also have excellent views of the river all the way to the Arrabida bridge. We looked around Porto for only a few months before before realizing we could get exactly what works best for us right here. We've also met some people who found their dream homes in Bonfim, which we also really like. Frankly, just about all the neighborhoods have something to offer thats unique. There is so much to love about this city!

Gaia actually named the entire country. In the past, Gaia was called "Calle", the port of the city became the city of Porto. the city of porto was becoming more important that Cale itself, and the two cities were caled Portuscalle. In XII century the county of Portucalle was given to a french knight from the house of burgandy. the name Calle cames from the galician people that lived in galicia and northern Portugal, with Bracara Augusta (today's Braga) was the main city.

This is a great video guys! So fun to see it now that we are here and have been to most of these places.
  • @wowporto1261
Great video and thanks for the visit! Glad you enjoyed and we hope to see you again soon.
  • @gnilesm
You guys are rock stars! I'm making my way through your whole series which should be required viewing for anyone considering a move to Portugal!

I’ve been to Gaia and didn’t even know it. I walked across the bridge and thought I was still in Porto. On the Porto side there’s a bar down at the bridge abutment overlooking the river. It’s a great place to have a drink and watch what’s going on in the water. They also had live music when I was there pre-Covid.
  • Thanks for this! I had been very curious about Gaia due to close proximity to Porto. Great info as always.
  • @Stopit77
Thank you for that info on Gaia! Love hearing about different affordable areas around PT. Much appreciated and I especially like that you mention the cost of apts in these areas.
  • @75jmd
Thanks again. Nice video and very informative with the more specific, personal commentary that gives us lots of useful details.

I didn't know there was so much to Gaia beyond the port houses. It's good to have Gaia and Matosinhos as options to Porto! Thanks for another great vlog!
  • Lucky you to be living on Porto... We love it and has visited several times over the eleven yrs we have been living down here in the Algarve. We have stayed in the fabulous wine hotel ' The Yeatman 'in Vila Nova de Gaia for special birthdays. Amazing views across the river to Porto .Only problem for us was the cooler, damper weather in the North..
  • Thank you for another great video. Just from watching your video's I feel I almost know enough about Porto and all the various neighbourhoods to narrow down where I want to start from. I was just looking at rentals in Gaia last night and this morning thinking that the proximity to the Metro and El Corte Inglés could be a good thing along with easy access to Porto too. Judging by this, I don't think I am far off.... But thanks again from Iceland :)
  • @user-rk8mr8ux5s
Another great option 😊🙌🏼. We can’t wait to get there👌🏽.
  • @snterp
I've asked this question myself. Thanks for addressing it.
  • @PD55_
Nobody expats to Porto anymore, its too crowded! Corny comments aside, this is another eye-opening video. Gaia looks like a great choice to visit or live, and it actually seems like you're still in the 21st century. Gaia might be cheaper, but Porto has Josh and Kallie which makes everything more expensive there!
  • @briantlougan810
Great info, thank you. I'd never heard of Gaia. And living just across the river from Porto for notably less money is an excellent tip.
