A Jocko Willink Story - From A Fellow Team 3 Navy SEAL

Published 2023-02-28
Much of what people think about when they think of SEALs is down to Jocko Willink. Jocko's reputation, leadership, and communication is renowned in the TEAMs and in civilian life. Hear from former TEAM 3 SEAL Garrett Unclebach in this story of what it was like to be in the SEALs when Jocko was still there.

This story shows the mindset and thinking Jocko had and was living out long before anyone knew who he was or read Extreme Ownership. After a grueling deployment to the middle East, Jocko came back and made sure future SEALs would be better prepared than he was.

And the best part of all this is the fact Jocko is a leader and not a boss. See a boss would make this all up and have others do it. A leader makes this up and then puts himself thru it. Jocko will never ask others to do something he hasnt done or is unwilling to do. Never met the man but love his books and podcasts. And frankly have yet to find someone that doesnt admire him.

I could only imagine how hard it is to go from being constantly cold during BUD/S, then all of a sudden, you’re in 120 degrees weather. Just sounds insane.

I can relate! Mid 1992, was stationed in San Diego, Navy also, had a detachment in Yuma Nice breeze and as soon as we peaked over the mountain, death valley. A/c on but felt like a warm hair dryer. Ah, still remember, still loved it though

Salton Sea was the ideal place. I went for multi-engine twin rating there in July 1991. Fricking hot. Flying in the plane was hot, shitty performance. Studying outside under some palm trees with sweat dripping off you. Check ride comes out over the lake and military jets flying over the top of you en route to bombing range at 29 Palms. Best time of my life. But stinking hot.
  • So how much does a Communication s Operator does physically?? Because from my Understanding he said he was a Communication s Teams Leader, I took it as he made sure you could call AIR FORCE, the SHIP, QRF,ETC. 🤷
