Catch that filtered water and reuse it. They release a pheromone in the water which helps attract more egg laying mosquitoes. Some species have a life cycle of only four days so keep a close eye on them til you are familiar with the life cycle and how it can get quicker with higher temperatures.

Just dumping the bucket of water would work also.. but then you cant watch the pesky mosquitos perish.

Good job and thanks! I love to play the role of a mass murderer sometimes.

If you come across water you can't drain out, a simple few drops of oil, any kind, on the water will suffocate them. They'll come up for air and as soon as they hit the oil they go crazy trying to break the surface tension but they can't.

reading some comments and thought about what I just found. I am rooting a Christmas cactus and just found a bunch of mosquito larvae in the water. this was In my house! glad I found them before they hatched! I guess what I'm trying to say is these nasty bugs are going to lay eggs anywhere and if you provide the place for them you ARE controlling some of thier population. Thanks for the video, enjoy

Great trap. I use a bucket of water to attract them too. I prefer the mosquito dunks though. They last 30 days and kills a lot of Larvae. To get good results start early in the season and use all summer.

I think this is smart way help get rid of some mosquitoes. I've done this and it's natural way kill mosquitoes, eliminating a step in their reproductive cycle. I wish this method was perfected, and taught as another approach to reducing mosquitoes. What's added to the water to more readily attract mosquitoes to lay eggs??
  • Larvae are air breathing so they don't die "instantly". Best thing would be to submerge that filter cloth with the larvae for some time in boiling water to kill them off.Otherwise it's a really excellent thing what you are doing.

You could just put buckets with soapy water (Dawn) around. The mosquitoes land, and sink. Can't lay the eggs.

Excellent information.  Thank You for saying that you will leave them in the sun.  Other experts say that if their water source dries up, they will hibernate.  I live in the US Virgin Islands and will try your method for sure.  Thank You.  Have a great Summer.

you know you could put Mosquito Dunks in the bucket and you dont have to empty it

I just pour the water on my plants where the dead mosquitoes give a little fertilizer

This video would be better if the narrative reflected what happens if the conditions are right for mosquitoes to continue their life cycle and the dangers of standing water. Depending on species, female mosquitoes lay between 100 and 200 eggs and live between two to four weeks. The female can breed, seek blood from hosts, and lay eggs multiple times until they die. The aquatic stages of a mosquito can last from 5 to 14 days and not all species of mosquitoes have eggs that hatch at the same time. Many of these factors are dependant on temperature and other conditions. If just 1 or 2 of those mosquitoes survive your "trap" or enter the adult stage before you empty the bucket, you are perpetuating the problem. It would be best to find other ways to combat the mosquito problem.
