The OSUCCC – James Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program pairs internationally-recognized experts with patients with multiple blood disorder, including leukemia. Ohio State BMT specialists work with colleagues across The James to provide patients with comprehensive care before, during and after their transplants.
“You need a holistic approach,” says Marcos de Lima, MD, the director of the Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program at The James. “There is a whole infrastructure that you need that goes way beyond the disease.”
Ohio State experts have performed more than 5000 successful BMT procedures since 1984, using both with and without donor cells.
“There are two types of transplants that use blood cells — one uses a patient’s and a second uses a donor and mostly treats blood cancers,” de Lima says.
The OSUCCC – James’ BMT specialists also conduct clinical research designed to improve existing procedures and discover new areas of innovation.
Among the results of this research is a radiation-free preparation method that is now used by doctors around the world for the treatment of blood disorders, including chronic myelogenous leukemia.
