Central Park Five: Statement of Steven Lopez regarding Yusef Salaam

This clip is from the statement of Steven Lopez, on April 21, 1989, to a representative of the District Attorney's Office, regarding the assaults and rape which took place in Central Park on April 19, 1989. A number of assaults preceded the infamous rape of Trisha Meili on that evening, and in this clip he describes one of those assault.

Lopez later took a plea bargain and pleaded guilty to the mugging of jogger John Loughlin, and was not convicted for the rape.

In this segment he speaks about convicted Central Park Five member Yusef Salaam, who on February 3, 2023, announced his candidacy to represent New York City Council District 9 (Central Harlem).

Lopez describes the attack on a male jogger wearing an army jacket, who was bashed repeatedly on the head and back with a solid metal pipe wrapped in black tape by Yusef Salaam. Salaam was later convicted on charges of Robbery in the First Degree and Rape in the First Degree.

As you can see at the beginning of the full interview, Lopez was read his rights in front of both of his parents, who were present throughout the interview. You can also see there that absolutely no coercion was involved.
