How racist highway designs impacted Tampa Bay neighborhoods

Published 2021-11-09
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is calling to attention the way racism played a role in the country’s major roadways. Instead of connecting communities, highway design was used to racially divide neighborhoods or displace and destroy minority communities altogether. Historians said Tampa Bay is among the areas with highway designs that displaced minorities and created racial inequity.

  • Segregation was a reality. However there is nothing stopping them now from living in either side.

Anyone who dismisses this is in denial or hasn’t taken the time to study some real US history. But we also know that this isn’t just about race but ultimately it’s about money at the expense of mostly POC.

Are you effen kidding me? It's garbage reporting like this that's causing your rating decline.
  • Because of the expense of road building and the necessity due to a growing population roads are built to connect two points with a straight line. This racism charge is nonsense,
  • It was more like poor ppl. All poor ppl. Not just black. They could get their land for cheap so they built it to separate poor from rich.
  • The historical amenisa that most Americans have is nauseating. This is historical fact, especially when you study the history and practice of redlining in the United States. The "ghettos" had nothing with the "moral failings of Blacks." They were legally created. There's nothing conspiratorial about it. People can just do a basic, cursory study of housing in the United States, and the construction of highways also comes up in the study. Because most Americans are not taught this, you believe that everyone...had an equal opportunity.
  • So what? Are you going to tear down bridges and reroute expressways that have been in place for 50, 60 and 70 years? Stop this divisive behavior.
  • Racist roads?! My god, I thought I heard everything, but this one is more delusional than proper grammar being racist!😂 These democrats never fail to make me laugh
