Today we crack open a time capsule and go over what has become one of my favorite interviews relating to Fire Emblem. a 90s era FE interview will of course be headlined by Shouzou Kaga, Fire Emblem's creator. But beside him for this sit down was none other than Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy. But in my opinion, to really appreciate what this interview meant at the time, context for Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, and 1994 is required.

I guess I'm still not over my "Fire Emblem Crossovers" arc. This was a short video but I hope you enjoyed it regardless. Please leave a like and comment down below! What are your thoughts on FF6? FE3's success? Or this interview in general? Please subscribe and if you can afford it, consider becoming a channel member!

I always like it when game developers come out and admit about how much fun they're having with other games. Back then, they could only say so in interviews and such, but now with social media, I always get a nice warm feeling when when one game developer who like and respect complements another game dev who I also like and resect.
  • We could have got a game designed by kaga where teenagers invoke Fire Emblem Characters.
  • Ahh, I found the image of the two just last year and it made so happy because FF is my favorite franchise (And Terra in the thumbnail with Marth makes me even more hype ahhh. FFVI is my favorite FF Game of all time and Terra is my favorite female character in the franchise as well).

It would be neat if Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy actually did cross paths and had a crossover game. It’s something I’ve been dreaming of for years now, and seeing this video in my subscriptions got me genuinely excited! Thanks for the amazing content, as always. 😊

It's so fun and interesting to see these two developers enjoying each other's games. It's so interesting and wonderful to see them show their tastes in games

These franchises NEED to officially crossover. Even if it's just Final Fantasy characters in Heroes. My two favorite franchises of all time and they fit so well together.

I've always been a huge FF fan, ever since I played FF1 on the NES, and FF6 is also my favorite FF game. I love the fact that that one photo of Kaga that everyone knows is the one from the interview with him and Sakaguchi. I think the connection between the two goes even deeper than this interview, though. It was during the development of FF6 that Sakaguchi came up with the idea for Final Fantasy Tactics. Because of working on FF6 and then FF7 in quick succession, he was never able to give any of his time to it then, and it wouldn't be until Yasumi Matsuno, creator of Tactics Ogre, joined Square that it would finally be created. I don't know this for sure, but I imagine that Sakaguchi's enjoyment of Fire Emblem, and possibly FE3 specifically, was what inspired him to come up with the idea for Tactics. Further, I wonder if Kaga's enjoyment of Final Fantasy was what inspired him to create a bigger and more grandiose story for FE4. I remember reading that he didn't even really want FE4 to be a strategy game, and wished it could be more of a party based RPG (which also explains some of the odd choices in game mechanics). Looking at the later work of these two men after this interview seems to indicate that they were equally inspired by one another.
  • Sacred Stones was my first it was hard to understand being 9 to 11 and not being a strategical person but by the time I beat it i was a little better, then Blazing Sword was my next and it was muh harder but Sacred Stones had me on the basic understanding to ultimately adapt to it and become great at it, I also like how these 2 were friends and very cordial and not hated rivals trying to destroy the other or copy off 1 game like today how everything is either CoD or Fortnite or Overwatch, I'm hoping FF16 is good
  • I love that this video was very personal with the experiences that you had with both games and them having a connection made it feel all more genuine.

listening to this is putting a smile on my face right now

IMO FE3 being the best selling game in Japan explains a lot why a lot of people there are fond of Marth and FE1 as a whole in spite of the NES game not doing so well there. As for Final Fantasy, while I liked 6 a lot, I personally had a bit more fun with 4 and 5, though mostly for nostalgia reasons.

Two of my favorite series. Loved this. Keep the good work, Ghast 👌🏻
  • Hearing all the stuff from this interview warms my heart and really gives a new light to that one picture of Kaga that we have with him and Sakaguchi. Seeing all the respect between these two guys and all the reach FE3 had in Japan is so nice to see especially for one of my favorite games in the series and obviously FF6 being a magnificent game in itself.
  • FFVI is a personal favorite and I've been really enjoying Mystery of the Emblem in my ongoing playthrough, so this was really cool to see.

    Super interesting video Ghast, thanks!
  • It makes sense that the so memed "only existing picture of Kaga" happens to be about this very special meeting
