Kpop Glossary, Vol 1: Engl(-ish?)

Published 2024-03-22
Kpop has its own vocabulary and I’m here to help break it down for you, starting with redefining some English words that mean something different in the context of Kpop. This will be part one of an ongoing Kpop glossary series, tentatively planned to contain at least five episodes. There’s a lot of ground to cover so be sure you subscribe if you want to be in the loop when future episodes post! I will also add links to them in this description as they go live over the next few months.

i love this channel, it makes me realize how much kpop terminology is uniquely kpop related lol

5:00 2nd gen obssesion with LED cube walls must be studied, I swear😂
  • 1:39- if I may add on to why a backtrack is used from a production stand point because it’s a niche interest of mine and something that I think recording artist such as Ariana Grande and Whitney Houston and K-pop idols like Rose of blackpink and Irene of red velvet have touched on before and that is you just simply can’t take a full studio with you on stage. When your recording tracks you can pause at anytime and switch out mic’s for certain members and sections. Using Ariana grande as my example because she has really taken to explaining this during her currently on going Eternal sunshine promotions she said she would bring in as many as 16 microphones in to just record one song, this is to catch all the nuance and sound of particular vocal ranges. Now obviously you would think the solution to try and over correct to get that nuance into the stage mic there using, well yes but that would lead to a very botched take on the song if you spend most of it over correcting in a different range, so back tracks are usually the points in the song where they need a little help the song sound closer to how it would actually sound if they were able to take every microphone used and switch them out at break neck speed while still hitting all the choreography of the concert and remaining viable to actually watch

While you find it excruciating, I love variety shows 😂😂. I watch them all day. I personally love watching kpop groups on variety shows and their own variety shows as well.( I might even love it more than I love listening to songs😅)
  • @thespianoge
This is great! I’m looking forward to more of your videos. I really appreciate someone who takes the time to have a mature, nuanced and realistic discussion about the elements of Kpop! (I also can’t handle variety shows…)
  • @yvesjbol

  • @guisas123
I'd never thought I'd see Craxy actually being promoted within a kpop themed video. You've done your research.
  • @ashurasama
On the subject of music show wins, the first one is actually quite important for the artist and their agency, because it means they can raise their performance fees. It's seen as a sign that they 'made it', in a way (I suppose that you're keeping "encore" for a part 2, the topic is a full can of worms rn lol).
  • @robtucker6303
Rainbow was one of the most underrated and mismanaged groups in Kpop history… zero wins. What a shame…
  • @soralution
Omg huge congrats on 400 subbies 🎉🎉🎉 I'm happy a video such as yours exist so that I can make use of these definitions later on :)))))
  • @zorasbae

  • @forzaturismo9991
Another great video! As someone still relatively new to kpop, these terms helped a lot!
  • 5:18- would it be inappropriate to say Girl Crush concepts have become K-pop equivalent of the “gay club pop music” sub genre of English pop
  • @Anebolos
I see your frustration with variety shows and I raise you the daddy of them all - Going Seventeen :-P Also gonna include this in my "converting people to K-pop" package of references. So far haven't had much success, but maybe this will boost my odds!
