Abolish Verticality đź“• | The Art of Chants of Sennaar

Published 2024-02-03
This month I'd like to highlight the excellent Chants of Sennaar, a real masterpiece from small French indie studio rundisc_. In this puzzle game, we explore the Tower of Babel and learn its different languages in order to recreate lost links between now distant peoples. It's a game in which the notion of humility runs through all artistic aspects, a humility that somewhat contradicts the tower's verticality, its hierarchy and its taste for emphasis. But all of Babel's inhabitants aren't that happy, and satisfaction conceals many humiliations.

All the "one-shot" analyses are here:    • ONE-SHOTS 💨

Beautiful analysis! You have given me some new insight into the game that I really appreciate. I've never noticed before you mentioned it that the game has different ways of emphasizing the character's humility and showing that he is not the protagonist in the traditional heroic way we're used to.
  • @sablestew
Wow just got recommended this video after finishing the game myself and your analysis work is top notch! As someone not musically inclined, your analysis on the themes presented throughout the games is so insightful. Excited to see what else you will do!

Since you like to make "movies" out of your videos, I'll make an essay out of my comment. I cannot BELIEVE how criminally underviewed your videos are. I know that subscriber numbers and view numbers are no actual indication of quality, but I still had to do a double take. This analysis is just as quality as channels such as Jacob Geller, Matthewmatosis, and Joseph Anderson. However, the added fact that you're a trained flautist, takes your analysis to such a heightened level. I'm a musician myself, mainly an electric guitarist, so I adored those musical sections. I especially enjoy how you play the songs fully, it really helps the viewer gain that context. Upon making this comment, I completed Chants of Sennaar only a few hours ago. It's how I stumbled upon your channel. Having finished watching your video, and looking through your old content, I am AMAZED at how similar our tastes in video games are. In fact, it's easier for me to state which games I haven't yet played/purchased. Those games are Death's Dore and Dome Keeper. Every other game you've made videos on or even slightly mentioned in this one, I have completed or have already purchased and will soon play. Language is fascinating to me. I was born in South Africa and have parents who speak Afrikaans. I grew up in Canada and the only language I speak is English. However, my parents of course like to speak to me in Afrikaans, and therefore, I understand the language quite well in the spoken form. However, I cannot speak it myself. Nor can I read or write it. I was never in an environment where I had to do those things, so those skills just never developed. I think because of this (and I admit this is a limiting thought-process) I believe I am stunted in fully aquiring other languages. In my adulthood I decided to start learning French. I primarly used Duolingo. After 2 years or so of learning French piece by piece every single day, I found that I was able to read the language at a pretty okay level. I'm incredibly slow at it, but I can do it. And as expected, I am unable to speak the language (obviously lack of practice), I'm pretty garbage at writing it, and I really struggle to understand it spoken. Now that all being said, I decided to challenge myself and play A Plague Tale: Requiem entirely in French. French dialogue, French subtitles, and even French instructions (menus, tutorials, etc). The subtitles absolutely carried me, and I was able to make it through the whole game and fully understand the story. Throughout the game I felt like I maybe understood 40% of what was being said, but thanks to context clues, I feel like I understood everything. I remember there was this moment in the game where a character said something to the effect of "find the man wearing brown". There was no waypoint or anything like that. If it was in English, it wouldn't have been a special moment for me. But the fact that I had to understand this phrase in French to proceed was a really special moment for me. Completing this game in French was such an achievement for me, I thought I'd share that with you. I also think it's awesome that you'll be making all your videos in both English and French! Another sign your channel is much more valuable than the views and subscribers would suggest. If you have any recommendations of games to play completely in French, I will gladly hear them! Another thing I wanted to bring up about language. So since learning French (to the degree that I learned it), I've also learned pieces of Dutch and Spanish. Even though I am unable to communicate in these languages, I still find value in learning the written or spoken aspect of them. Anyway, after completing this game, it dawned on me that from the player's perspective we are exclusively reading these languages. But from the character's perspective, they are speaking, hearing, reading, and writing these languages. It then crossed my mind (from my understanding) that these languages are written in a logographic way, as opposed to a phonographic way. I only have experience with learning languages that use the Latin alphabet. Mandarin uses logographs for its writing system, where one symbol can represent an entire concept. The languages in these games seem to work the same. I guess it's hard to tell because we can't hear them. The devotees represent plurals by using the word twice. But do they literally say "Potion Potion" or is that just simply how it's written? I just thought that was fun to think about. I really look forward to watching your other videos. Especially the Shadow of the Colossus one, as that is my favourite game of all time. I've subscribed! I will do my best to let others know about your channel, you definitely deserve recognition for producing such incredible work! Bravo! Merci pour votre belle analyse!

You should play outer wilds!! I love your music focused analysis on this game and i would love to watch your analysis of outer wilds(my favorite game)
  • @lioneldivers6859
Very good work and analysis. Congratulations. Lile others, I finaly understood some important details of the game thanks to your view. I do like the way you take into consideration the overall signification of the structure of the game and the importance of the music in it. Again, thank you and congratulations.

Thank you so much! I love your passion for games and music! I followed through your Ori series and it is a masterpiece of an essay and analysis. I recently discovered both "APlague Tale" games and both games' scores struck me unlike nothing but Ori's scores did before. If I could suggest a topic for an upcoming video, it would be the scores of "A Plague Tale Innocence" and "A Plague Tale Requiem".

I've been listening to the soundtrack of Chants of Sennaar on Spotify a lot and I was watching this video trying to figure out which track was played when exactly, but I noticed that there are a few tracks in the actual game that are not in the official soundtrack on Spotify (I don't mean short jingles or sth but actual music). Anyone know why this is?
