I have been edcing a fixed blade as my primary knife for over 10yrs now and everything you stated is spot on with my experience, but the biggest thing I feel with fixed blades is the value you get with them. Generally speaking a 125-170 dollar fixed blade will give you significantly more knife than a folder in the same range.
  • @npenick66
I went edc fixie back around 2007 after almost losing an inch of my index finger to a Cold Steel xl Vaquerro that accidently guillotined closed. Once you get used to fixies there's no going back. By far the most comfortable has been the Creely Mako, not just the handle but the sheath. Take a look at their deep carry leather sheath with the ulticlip, they've been using this design for years. It is so comfortable that you don't even know its there and it is so easy to draw and resheath. Didn't think I'd like it, had a kydex sheath made for the Mako but after trying the leather sheath I'm looking to have similar sheaths made for my other small fixies.

I went from folders to fixed blades and now I'm back to OTF's and simple folders like my Sebenzas. The Sebenza really broke my knife obsession pretty well. I got to where I just carry a Sebenza and nothing else because it can do everything I used to feel like i needed more task specific knives. I do carry a Sebenza or Bugout and an OTF because I don't like cutting food with an OTF but otherwise, I don't carry a fixed blade regularly anymore, except in the woods.
  • @zer0bytes2000
LOL Ricky , that was great! "...he doesn't even work." 👍
  • @jblewis1975
Now that I'm retired, a fixed blade and a SAK combo is pretty much all I carry. Oh, and you're completely right about the weird looks that people give when you pull out a fixed blade in public, but I don't care. I'm too old to worry about other folks like that. Great video! 😁👊🏻
  • @Gargola308
My EDC is an ESEE-4 fixed blade... and I'm in love with it...
  • @The_RC_Guru
I edc a fixed blade and a folder, stone sharpen and diamond compound strop knives for me and others, and watch knife content daily. I USE a knife for like…. Occasional mail…. But when I need a good sharp edge once a month maybe I sure am prepared 😂! Oh and I drive a semi all over the USA so it’s a secondary tool to help keep my heart beating if needed that’s always there. Carrying a fixie 24/7 means you don’t really have to consciously think about reaching for it. Muscle memory takes over.
  • @nmda9578
Fixed blade is the way to go. Waaay better for working in the yard, around the house, camping, food prep, carving, etc. You can beat the crap out of fixed blades and they're fine. I always keep one in my vehicle too.
  • @tr_edc78
You are definitely the reason why I have bought more small fixed blades and I am not mad about. They definitely make an awesome EDC!!
  • Pocket clips on folders are made so you lose the knife. Stuck to my seatbelt, almost lost. Outdoor snags on leaves, branches, tall grass, bushes. Grandpa didn’t use a pocket clip. Kept his folder in bottom of his pocket. Love the idea of fixed place edc.
  • The reason I don't EDC a fixed blade is the right sheath for the right knife combo that you discussed. Could use a video with the best combinations that you have found. I also like that, with a folder, the clip is usually the only thing showing.
  • Hey Taylor, really-really good comprehensive video done here. I've been a fan of your videos for years. Most folks who have been around me know that I've been carrying both fixed blades and folders for at least twenty years (and really much much longer than that if I'm being honest). You made many excellent points in your wonderful, well thought out video, young sir, and I absolutely agree with the many excellent points you've made in this video. Blades are really a very functional tool that can be used in seemingly endless ways to help in various tasks, and this is one reason that I have carried at least one Bark River knife for bushcrafting, and other types of blades for Kali and Silat work for many-many... many years now. I guess that at this point, I've pretty much got my little system dialed in right where I want it. Please keep up the wonderfully comprehensive work that you do in your videos, and may you and your family always be well young sir. 🫡
  • I too live in NC. Born and bred. I both love and hate it. Would love to move out west but too old and broke. Plus can't leave all my dogs that have passed on. I visit their graves every day even after 20 years. I miss them so much. That being said, have you ever eaten at Stephenson's Bar- be- que in Johnston Co.? Would love to meet you in person to purchase a few things cause I like to hold an item before I buy it. Thanks for all your great videos and all the info they contain. James S. NC

so I use my knife many times a day, back when I primarily carried a folder i would wear out the pivot or break the blade every 10 to 15 months, black Friday 2021, the Gerber tri tip and the utilclip were both on sale on amazon, and I'm still carrying that in my right front pocket. the paint has worn off the clip, and the knife handle has some dents from where I've used it as a hammer, but it still works fantastically.
  • @Steakfrie
I'm volunteering to be a fly in the ointment here. I'm only seeing a 16 min hard sell on knife advocacy. The first clue was "a folder has a ton of moving parts". Since when? "Fixed blade carries are more versatile" is another disingenuous claim. It was funny watching you attempt to shrug off folders in belt sheaths. I'm a knife guy through and through, owning many fixed and folding knives, but it should not be confused with obsessive. My grandfather was a general contractor with amazing skills which provided him the opportunity to carry anything in any fashion. He chose a small stockman to get the day-to-day job done. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and still found little reason for a fixed blade until butchering time. That was done at home. Fixed carry might be OK for many job environments but in many won't. I would have been shouted down instantly if I attempted to carry a fixed blade into my office environment. I see some here talking about carrying a fixed into church? C'mon, this is the point of 'knife life' obsession. I like fixed blades as much as folders, but there are appropriate times and situations for both, thus the reason for the grand variety.
  • I have been carrying a fixed blade EDC for several years now, but I still carry a couple folders for utility (SAK, knives with a punch blade, etc). I like the Benchmade fixed blade Griptilian that I got a custom sheath for, and am currently carrying it. I have carried a RMJ UCAP, and also a Benchmade Protagonist. I also have carried a Muela Colibri for awhile. I really like that knife. I have made a paracord loop that I have hooked a carabiner through, and just clip it to a belt loop. It is very versatile and makes a great steak knife when out in a restaurant. I like the looks of your Lookout knife. I would like to get one in MagnaCut, but they don’t seem to be available right now. Thanks for sharing.
  • @JROTCBALL
I got me the MKM pocket tango in the nesmuck configuration and edc’d for 2-3 months, love it
  • Well put argument. I like my Brisa Necker a lot, quite small but works excellent even for my 9-10 sized hands. The leather sheath sucks so prepare to wetform it yourself or get the Kydex. The Real Steel CVX80 is the only knife knife I actually own twice because I like it so much. And my Lionsteel M4 is not a small knife but finds its way into my pocket on a regular basis. So yes, fixed blades for edc works well for me.
  • @MattSpinks
Reason #1, no moving parts means more reliability: My Dad has carried the same knife for the last ten years. I've been carrying a mini bugout for a solid ten years. Never had any "reliability problems." Well except my blad is shaped funny now from sharpening. Don't baton. Period. There's a tool for splitting wood. It's not a knife... Ergonomics: Really? You want to put a big ol hand filling ergonomic handle on an EDC fixed blade? I thought not. Unsheathing and then finding the sheath again to put away a fixed blade takes more fiddling and time than grabbing a crossbar lock knife, flipping it open, then shut, then shoving it in your pocket. "Adjust your grip..." You can't be serious. You listed that as a drawback! You have to adjust your grip every single time you use your hand to grip anything at all. In life. In general. That's how hands work. I could say, "draw your overly large handled, cumbersome, takes up your entire pocket fixed blade, adjust your grip, then cut whatever alien technology piece of tape requires a 6" fixed blade knife, the fiddle around for a minute trying to find the sheath without cutting yourself, then sheath it after cutting a hole in your jeans." I made it four minutes. I can't take it.
  • @BUCKSHOTSTV
You’re right about people getting weird when you have a fixed blade knife. I had a small skinner, my going out knife, on me at a new church that I was hoping to start attending. I bent over to let my son walk in the foyer of the church and next thing I know the security guard came up to me and said my knife was scaring people! That made me feel horrible. Especially since most of the men had their knives clearly showing to be seen. Mine was nice and neat under my shirt and I was the one called out for it. I never went back to that church.
