The path to knighthood started at the age of 7. A boy born of nobility was sent to a castle as a page and at age 14 he became a squire. As a squire he could go into battle as an assistant to a knight, and at age 21 they could become a full knight themselves.

We hope you enjoyed this overview of knights in the medieval era! We will make more videos on the specific knights featured in the video such as the Templars comment below if you want to see that.

Myth that plate armour is heavy and restricts movement. Mail is heavier.
  • Ok, no, plate armor wasn't heavy. It weighed about the same as football armor and didn't restrict movement, with videos of people vaulting and climbing obstacles clad head to toe in plate armor. I need to point that out as it's a common misconception the plate armor was heavy.

Full playe armor didn't make you less mobile, you can see people in actual full plate armor doing handstands, running, and jumping. This armor weighs about the same as today's soldiers equipment.
  • @akusmith7924
Common misconception but full plate armor is actually very maneuverable. There are some videos you can watch with people sprinting and even doing cartwheels in full plate.

The crossbow was around long before the invention of gunpowder

Interestingly enough, someone decided to hold a race through an obstacle course between a firefighter, a modern soldier, and a knight in full plate armor. All three were wearing their full gear including helmets. Surprisingly enough, the knight made it through with the fastest time, followed by the firefighter (who had the heaviest equipment load) with the soldier taking third place. It was speculated that though the knight was wearing plate armor, it was tailor made for him and didn't hinder his movement very much

I remember reading about knights and seeing the images when I was 7-8 years old lol. At that time I didnt realize it but it was only the beginning for my of history. I only realized know that some of my actions directly led me to appreciate history as it is right now. This video brought back memories from that period. Thank you simple history for doing this.

Excelent video. I used your videos for my history classes. Teachers and students love it.
  • Keep up the great work! Would like to see more Medieval content like the 100 Year War and the Crusades, or maybe even the Napoleonic Wars?
  • I would love to see more videos describing the different groups of Knights. Pope Urban II would be very proud of this video!
