Shechem was first mentioned in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament in Genesis 12:6 - 8 it says that Abraham reached the 'great tree of Moreh' at Shechem and he offered sacrifice.
In the New Testament it is called Sychar as it is recorded in John 4 where Jesus met with the Samaritan woman at the well.
Shechem is estimated to be 4000 years old and it was an Israelite city. It is the center of the promised land according to the Old testament.
Shechem is about 30 miles North of Jerusalem and about same distance NorthEast of Tel Aviv.
During the Bible times is was allocated to the tribe of Ephraim.
Shechem is a plain / valley that lies between two mountains.
Mount Gerizim { Deuteronomy 28:1-14} it is the mount of blessings and
Mount Ebal or Eval {Deuteronomy 28:15 -68 }
Mount Gerizim is the holiest place of worship for the Samaritans.
Samaritans are a group of Israelites who were unfaithful when Israel was exiled by Assyrians. The group that remained and intermarried with unbelievers.
Samaritans only believe in the first 5 books of Old Testament - Torah or Pentateuch.
From Mount Gerizim you can have a clear look at the valley of Shechem or valley of decision from Yosef Vantage point.
