Okay, I feel like I have to push back on the slanders about Richard in this comment section. First of all, the Third Crusade managed to retake most of Saladin's posession post-Hattin. At one point the crusaders were just a few kilometers from Jerusalem, and both Christian and Muslim sources agree that Richard could have very well conquer the city, but wouldn't be able to defend it when the Muslim inevitably launch their counterattack. Richard also defeated Saladin in every battle they fought. Philip II only agreed to take the Cross for pragmatic reason. He was getting bullied by Henry II in every battle, and when the Pope issued the call, Philip took it so Henry would stop bullying him. Once the Crusader took Acre, Philip fked off, and began scheming with John who was left as a regent while Richard was Crusading. Frederick Barbarossa converted into a submarine in Anatolia, and his army just imploded. The Muslim was well supplied by the grain powerhouse of Egypt, so Richard left a note for future Crusaders to take Egypt first before going to the Holy Land (hence, the Fourth Crusade was originally meant to go to Egypt before they ultimately said 'fk it, Constantinople will do'). Now I want you to put yourself in Richard'd position. You're in a hostile territory, far away from Christian allies with limited amount of soldiers whilst back home, your brother is consipiring against you with the guy who were suppose to be Crusading with you. I'd say he did better than most would.
